Hello & Goodbye
Hello & Goodbye
Today we use hello, goodbye, and wave to notice two everyday social moments. Looking, turning towards someone, waving, or quietly pausing are all valid; hugs, handshakes, and eye contact are never required.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 3 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, making one small movement, or saying one word all count as meaningful responses. Do not test reading, ask for memorisation, or require an adult-style greeting.

How to use it
Use only this A4 picture, printed or displayed full-screen. Notice HELLO 你好, GOODBYE 再见, and WAVE 挥挥手, then follow LOOK 看一看, WAVE 挥挥手, and PAUSE 停一停. Finish by counting only the bottom row: one child, two hands, and three smiling faces.
Goals
- Chinese: understand 你好, 再见, 挥挥手, 看一看, and 停一停.
- English: meet
hello, goodbye, wave, look, andpause. - Social-emotional learning: notice that people may respond to arrivals and departures in different ways.
- Early math: touch and count one child, two hands, and three smiling faces along the bottom.
- Life skills: choose one comfortable greeting during a natural arrival or departure.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- A calm place to sit or stand while looking.
No doll, flashcard, doorbell, or other teaching object is needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
- Point to the first card: “小朋友挥手说你好。”
- Point to the second: “要离开了,可以说再见。”
- Point to the third: “这是一只挥动的小手。”
- Notice the middle row: “先看一看,再挥挥手,也可以停一停。”
Choose only one or two prompts:
- “谁在说你好?”
- “哪张图是再见?”
- “你想看一看、挥挥手,还是停一停?”
If Amara only looks, say: “你在安静地看,也是在参与。”
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
| English | Meaning | Picture or action response |
|---|---|---|
hello | 你好 | Point to the greeting child |
goodbye | 再见 | Point to the two waving children |
wave | 挥挥手 | Point to the large hand or make a small wave |
look | 看一看 | Look towards a preferred card |
pause | 停一停 | Rest the hands and pause |
Model:
Hello.Goodbye.Wave, wave.Look or pause?
Say one short chunk at a time. A nod, turn, wave, or no movement is acceptable; a complete sentence is not required.
3. Early Math: One Child, Two Hands, Three Faces
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Use only the bottom row:
- Touch the one child once:
one child. - Touch the two hands one at a time:
one, two. - Touch the three smiling faces one at a time:
one, two, three.
Use one number word for one complete icon. Do not count fingers, hair, or facial features, and do not test numeral recognition.
4. Safe Movement: Look, Wave, Pause
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Move away from the screen and choose one:
- Gently turn the body towards the adult:
Look. - Keep the arm near the body and make a small wave:
Wave. - Relax both hands and become still briefly:
Pause.
Social and Movement Safety
Do not require a handshake, hug, kiss, face touch, or eye contact. Leave space between a waving hand, the screen, furniture, and other people. Respect turning away, walking away, or saying no and end immediately.
5. Everyday Life: Choose a Greeting
During a natural arrival or departure, the adult models once:
- “你好,我挥挥手。”
- “我们要走了,再见。”
You can wave or just look.
Invite once without asking for a performance. A glance, moving near a familiar adult, waving, or saying one word all count.
Bedtime Recall
- “今天哪张图是你好?”
- “离开时可以说什么?”
Hello or goodbye?- “你喜欢挥手,还是安静看一看?”
If Amara does not answer, share an observation instead of repeating questions.
