Slow Breathing
Slow Breathing
Today we use three calm picture cues—smell the flower, blow the pinwheel, and rest—to imagine one or two gentle breaths before returning to normal breathing.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 3–4 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes, but the breathing part itself lasts only one or two gentle breaths. Looking, pointing, relaxing the shoulders, making a soft breath, or saying one word all count as meaningful responses. Participation is optional; this is not a performance test or medical treatment.

How to use it
Print in colour on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page” selected, or show it full-screen. Point to the flower, pinwheel, and cushion. Then imagine smelling the pictured flower, gently blowing the pictured pinwheel, and resting. Use no real plant or pinwheel. Count only the bottom row. Amara does not need to read, take a deep breath, copy the adult, or finish all three cues.
Goals
- Chinese: understand 花, 风车, 靠垫, 闻闻花香, 吹小风车, and 休息 through pictures and calm modelling.
- English: meet
flower, pinwheel, cushion, smell the flower, blow the pinwheel, andrest. - Early math: touch exactly one flower, two pinwheels, and three cushions in the bottom row.
- Movement: relax the shoulders and make at most one or two comfortable breath movements.
- Self-regulation: notice that resting or declining the activity is always acceptable.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- No real flower, plant, pinwheel, cushion, scent, or blowing object is required.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Describe the cards without asking for a breath:
- “这是一朵图片里的花,我们可以想象轻轻闻一下。”
- “这是图片里的小风车,可以想象轻轻吹一下。”
- “累了就休息,回到平常自然呼吸。”
- “只做一两次,不憋气,也不用深深吸气。”
Choose one prompt:
- “花在哪里?”
- “哪张图在休息?”
- “你想看风车,还是直接休息?”
Pointing or choosing rest is a complete response.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes, with only one or two gentle breaths if Amara freely joins.
| English | Meaning | Response |
|---|---|---|
flower | 花 | Point to flower |
pinwheel | 风车 | Point to pinwheel |
cushion | 靠垫 | Point to cushion |
smell the flower | 闻闻花香 | Imagine one soft in-breath |
blow the pinwheel | 吹小风车 | Imagine one soft out-breath |
rest | 休息 | Breathe normally and relax |
Use short chunks:
Smell the flower—gently.Blow the pinwheel—softly. One breath is enough. Now rest.Breathe normally.
Do not ask Amara to inhale deeply, make the breath longer, hold it, or repeat after the adult.
3. Early Math: Flower, Pinwheels, Cushions
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Use only the bottom cards:
- Under 1, touch the one flower once and say
one flower. - Under 2, touch the two separate pinwheels one at a time and say
one, two. - Under 3, touch the three separate cushions one at a time and say
one, two, three.
Do not count petals, pinwheel blades, people, breath lines, or objects in the upper cards. The goal is one touch for one whole pictured item, not numeral recognition.
4. Calm Action: One Gentle Cycle
Time: less than 1 minute within a 3–5 minute calm interaction.
If Amara chooses to join:
- Relax the shoulders and sit comfortably.
- Look at the flower and allow one small, comfortable in-breath.
- Look at the pinwheel and allow one soft out-breath.
- Rest and return to ordinary breathing.
One cycle is enough; at most repeat once. No breath-holding, forceful blowing, repeated rapid breathing, or correction.
5. Life Skill: Rest Is a Choice
Time: 3–5 minutes during a naturally quiet moment.
The adult may offer:
- “想轻轻呼吸一次,还是直接休息?”
One gentle breath or rest?
Accept looking away, saying no, moving on, or resting. Slow breathing is one optional calming tool, not a condition for comfort or adult support.
Breathing Safety
Use only the pictures; do not offer a real plant, fragrance, or small pinwheel. Never force deep breathing or breath-holding. Stop immediately for discomfort, coughing, wheezing, dizziness, distress, unusual tiredness, or any worsening symptom. Breathing difficulty is an emergency: seek urgent emergency help according to local guidance.
Bedtime Recall
- “今天看到了花、风车和什么?”
- “做完一次轻轻呼吸后可以做什么?”
Flower, pinwheel, or cushion? One gentle breath or rest?
Keep it conversational. Do not ask Amara to practise breathing in bed.
