Breakfast Things
Breakfast Things
Today we look at a cup, bowl, and spoon while connecting them with drinking, scooping, and waiting for hot food to cool under adult control.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 3–4 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, copying a small gesture, making a sound, or saying one word all count as meaningful responses. This is a picture conversation, not a utensil test or independent meal task.

How to use it
Print in colour on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page” selected, or show it full-screen. Find the cup, bowl, and spoon. Then point to drink, scoop, and cool first. Count only the bottom row. Amara does not need to read, use a real utensil, touch food, or remember all three actions.
Goals
- Chinese: understand 杯子, 碗, 勺子, 喝, 舀, and 先放凉 through pictures and adult descriptions.
- English: meet
cup, bowl, spoon, drink, scoop, andcool first. - Early math: touch exactly one cup, two bowls, and three spoons in the bottom row.
- Movement: copy gentle pretend drinking, scooping, and waiting actions.
- Life skills: sit with an adult and wait while the adult handles and checks hot food.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- No cup, bowl, spoon, food, or drink is required for the lesson.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Describe one card at a time:
- “这是杯子,可以用来喝。”
- “这是碗,早餐可以放在碗里。”
- “这是勺子,可以轻轻舀。”
- “热食由大人端、搅拌和检查,先放凉再给孩子。”
Choose one or two prompts:
- “杯子在哪里?”
- “哪张图在舀?”
- “热的早餐由谁处理?”
If Amara points to the adult, add: “对,大人先检查。”
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes, focused on listening, pointing, and gestures.
| English | Meaning | Response |
|---|---|---|
cup | 杯子 | Point to cup |
bowl | 碗 | Point to bowl |
spoon | 勺子 | Point to spoon |
drink | 喝 | Pretend to lift an empty cup |
scoop | 舀 | Make one small scooping motion |
cool first | 先放凉 | Hold hands back and wait |
Use short chunks:
Here is a cup.Scoop with a spoon.Drink slowly.Hot food. Wait.Cool first.
Accept a look, point, gesture, sound, or one word. Do not ask for translation or repetition.
3. Early Math: Cup, Bowls, Spoons
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Use only the bottom cards:
- Under 1, touch the one cup once and say
one cup. - Under 2, touch the two separate bowls one at a time and say
one, two. - Under 3, touch the three separate spoons one at a time and say
one, two, three.
Do not count handles, food pieces, people, or utensils in the upper cards. The aim is one touch for one whole pictured item, not numeral recognition.
4. Movement: Drink, Scoop, Wait
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Move away from the screen:
Drink— pretend to lift a light empty cup with two hands.Scoop— make one slow scooping motion in the air.Cool first— place both hands by the body and wait. All ready— smile and relax.
Use empty hands only. One small action is enough.
5. Life Skill: Adult Prepares Breakfast
Time: 3–5 minutes during a meal that is already happening.
The adult chooses suitable food, handles every hot dish or drink, stirs and checks temperature, portions the food, and keeps the toddler seated and supervised. Amara may point to the utensil or join one safe step after the adult decides it is ready.
Breakfast Safety
The adult controls hot food and drink at all times; keep them out of reach until safely cooled and checked. Seat the toddler upright and supervise eating continuously. Offer developmentally appropriate food textures and utensil sizes, watch for choking, and do not let the child walk or play with food or a spoon in the mouth.
Bedtime Recall
- “今天看到了杯子、碗和什么?”
- “热早餐要先做什么?”
Cup, bowl, or spoon?Scoop or cool first?
Keep it conversational. Amara may answer with a point, waiting gesture, sound, or one word.
