Gentle Hands
Gentle Hands
Today we notice hands, a toy, and a book, then practise three positive ideas: touch gently, turn gently, and give gently.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 3 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, opening the hands, copying part of an action, or saying one word all count as meaningful responses. Use only calm positive examples; there is no need to demonstrate an unsafe action or require Amara to touch or give anything.

How to use it
Use only this A4 picture, printed or displayed full-screen. First find the open hands, teddy bear, and book. Then point to gentle touching, page turning, and giving a large ball to an adult. Count only the bottom row: one bear, two books, and three large soft blocks. Reading the labels is not required.
Goals
- Chinese: understand 小手, 玩具, 书 and 轻轻摸, 轻轻翻, 轻轻递.
- English: meet
hands, toy, book, touch, turn, give, andgentle. - Social-emotional learning: notice calm open hands and respect another person's response.
- Early math: count one bear, two books, and three large soft blocks.
- Movement: copy three small open-hand gestures without touching another person.
- Life skills: handle a familiar page gently with adult help during a natural reading moment.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- A clear place for small hand gestures.
No toy, ball, block, book, pet, or other teaching object is required.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Describe one card at a time:
- “这是张开的、放松的小手。”
- “这是柔软的小熊玩具。”
- “这是一本书。”
- “小朋友轻轻摸小熊。”
- “小朋友用手指轻轻翻一页。”
- “小朋友用双手把大球轻轻递给大人。”
Choose only one or two prompts:
- “小手在哪里?”
- “哪张图在轻轻翻书?”
- “你想指玩具,还是书?”
If Amara opens a hand or points, name it warmly: “你的手放松地打开了。” No performance is required.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
| English | Meaning | Picture or gesture |
|---|---|---|
hands | 小手 | Point to the open hands |
toy | 玩具 | Point to the teddy bear |
book | 书 | Point to the closed book |
touch | 轻轻摸 | Move one open hand slowly |
turn | 轻轻翻 | Pretend to turn one page |
give | 轻轻递 | Offer two empty open hands |
Model:
Gentle hands.Touch gently.Turn one page.Give it gently.Hands can rest.
Say one short chunk and wait. A look, point, open hand, or partial word is enough; do not require repetition.
3. Early Math: One Bear, Two Books, Three Blocks
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Use only the bottom row:
- Under 1, touch the one bear once:
one bear. - Under 2, touch the two books one at a time:
one, two. - Under 3, touch the three soft blocks one at a time:
one, two, three.
Count each whole picture once. Do not count bear ears, book-cover flowers, block faces, or printed numerals.
4. Movement: Open, Move, Rest
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Move away from the screen:
- Open both hands comfortably for
gentle hands. - Move one open hand slowly through the air for
touch. - Offer both empty hands towards the adult for
give. - Bring the hands back to the body for
rest.
Amara may choose only one gesture. She never needs to touch the adult or hand over an object.
Gentle-Hand Safety and Boundaries
Keep all examples positive, slow, and object-free. Do not ask Amara to demonstrate an unsafe action, touch a person or pet, or give up an object she wants to keep. Stop when she moves away, closes her hands, or says no. An adult handles sharp, hot, heavy, breakable, or small objects.
5. Everyday Connection
The poster is enough. If a normal reading moment happens later, the adult may guide one familiar page and say:
Turn gently.- “轻轻翻一页。”
All done. Hands can rest.
Do not create a sharing test or withhold an item until Amara performs a polite gesture.
Bedtime Recall
- “今天小手轻轻做了什么?”
- “小熊、书和积木,你最喜欢哪个?”
Touch, turn, or give?Gentle hands or resting hands?
Amara may point or show one open hand; no spoken answer is required.
