Shape Town
Shape Town
Today we visit a little town made of circles, squares, and triangles. Looking, pointing, tracing, finding, and moving help the three shapes become familiar.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 4 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, tracing an outline, moving, or saying one word all count as meaningful responses. Shape words are for repeated listening and recognition in context; do not test reading or expect the right spoken answer every time.

How to use it
Print in colour on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page” selected. If a printer is unavailable, show it full-screen on a tablet or computer. Guide Amara through a short sequence: visit the town, find a shape, trace it with one finger, and copy a body movement. She does not need to read the Chinese or English labels.
Goals
- Chinese: hear 圆形, 正方形, and 三角形 in context, then respond with a point, trace, movement, or short word.
- English: meet
circle, square, andtrianglethrough the picture and actions. - Early math: notice the overall appearance of each shape and try matching shapes that look alike.
- Movement: trace outlines with one finger and use arms or the whole body to explore curves, straight edges, and a pointed roof.
- Life skills: wash hands, drink water, or put the teaching picture away after the activity.
Materials
- The A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- A clear space where Amara can stand and stretch her arms safely.
No blocks, shape cards, crayons, or other objects are needed.
1. Morning Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Let Amara explore the town freely. Describe the place that first catches her attention:
- “圆圆的钟表是圆形。”
- “这扇窗户像正方形。”
- “屋顶尖尖的,像三角形。”
Choose only one or two prompts:
- “圆形在哪里?”
- “你想先看圆形钟表,还是三角形屋顶?”
- “哪个形状有尖尖的地方?”
- “我们用手指沿着这条边走一走。”
If she only points to the clock, respond with “你找到圆形钟表了。”
If she names the wrong shape, do not say “No”. Simply model it: “你指的是三角形,尖尖的三角形。”
Today's Original Mini Story
Little Circle is a round clock that goes tick-tock.
Little Square is a window with four straight edges.
Little Triangle sits on a pointed roof and waves to its friends.
The clock, window, and roof greet one another in Shape Town.
They say, “We look different, and we can still play together!”
As you tell the story, let one finger travel to the three places. There is no need to remember the plot or answer every question.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes, focused on listening, pointing, and tracing.
Words
| English | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| circle | 圆形 | Trace one continuous curve |
| square | 正方形 | Travel along four straight edges |
| triangle | 三角形 | Point to the top |
Useful Chunks
Show me the circle.Show me the square.Show me the triangle. The circle is round.A square window.A triangle-shaped roof.
Play:
- Say
Show me the circle.and wait for a look or point. - Trace one curve and say
Round and round—a circle. - Travel around the square and say
Straight, straight—a square. - Point to the triangle's top and say
Up to the top—a triangle.
Do not require translation, repetition, or a complete pronunciation of the longer word triangle. Pointing, tracing, or trying part of the word is enough.
3. Early Math: Where Does the Shape Go?
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Find a Matching Shape
- Point to one circle: “这是圆形。图里还有圆形吗?”
- After finding one square, look together for another square-like place.
- Point to a triangle roof: “尖尖的三角形在这里。”
- Offer a choice: “下一站去圆形,还是正方形?”
Finger-Tracing Paths
- Circle: move one finger all the way round without stopping.
- Square: travel along one edge, turn a corner, and continue.
- Triangle: start at the bottom, travel to the top, and return to the bottom.
Count Only If Interested
- On the bottom row, touch one circle and say
one. - Touch the two squares one at a time and say
one, two. - Touch the three triangles one at a time and say
one, two, three.
Add this only while Amara is interested. Match one finger touch to one shape and one number word; she does not need to count independently or recognise numerals.
The aim is visual noticing, matching, and movement experience. Do not ask Amara to recite numbers of sides or corners, read labels, or name every shape.
4. Gross Motor Play: Make a Shape
Time: 3–8 minutes.
Choose two or three movements in a safe space:
- “手臂抱成圆圆的圆形。”
- “双手举高碰一碰,变成尖尖的三角形屋顶。”
- Walk a few steps along an imaginary straight line and pause at a corner.
- Name one shape; Amara may point to it or choose a body movement in response.
Movement Safety
Do not expect an accurate geometric pose. Curving the arms, touching hands overhead, or walking a few straight steps are all suitable attempts. Use a clear, non-slip space. When using a screen, look first and move the device to a safe place before active play.
5. Outdoor Observation
Add one relaxed 3–8 minute observation to normal outdoor play:
- Notice whether a wheel, clock face, or round sign looks like a circle.
- Look for a square-like window, paving stone, or sign.
- Notice a roof, sign, or leaf with a triangle-like point.
- Model “I found a circle,” then let Amara decide whether to look too.
Real objects are rarely perfect geometric shapes, so say “looks like a circle” or “has a triangle-like point”. Return to child-led outdoor play afterwards.
6. Life Skills: Close Shape Town
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Invite Amara to complete one or two steps:
- Return the A4 teaching picture to its folder or usual place.
- Walk to the handwashing area.
- Dry her hands after washing.
- Bring her own cup and drink water.
Use short prompts:
Put it away.Wash hands.
Bedtime Recall
Keep it conversational rather than testing:
- “今天你喜欢圆圆的,还是尖尖的?”
- “我们在哪里看到了圆形?”
Circle, square, or triangle?- “明天还想去形状小镇吗?”
