Water Safety
Water Safety
Today we look at a bath, pool, and pond while learning one firm rule: a toddler is always with a close, actively supervising adult near water.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 3–4 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, moving closer to the adult, offering a hand, making a sound, or saying one word all count as meaningful responses. This is a poster conversation, not swimming practice or a safety test.

How to use it
Print in colour on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page” selected, or show it full-screen. Find the adult and child together in every water picture. Point to bath, pool, and pond, then practise adult, stay close, and hold hands. Count only the bottom row. Amara does not need to read, remember rules, approach water, or answer every question.
Goals
- Chinese: understand 浴缸, 泳池, 池塘, 大人, 靠近, and 牵手 through pictures and adult descriptions.
- English: meet
bath, pool, pond, adult, stay close, andhold hands. - Early math: touch exactly one life ring picture, two towels, and three water drops in the bottom row.
- Movement: practise moving towards the adult, pausing, and offering a hand on dry ground.
- Life skills: remain within the adult's reach whenever water is present.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- No bath, basin, pool, water container, float, or outdoor visit is needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Describe one picture at a time:
- “洗澡时,大人一直在浴缸旁边,手能碰到孩子。”
- “在泳池里,大人抱稳孩子,不离开。”
- “池塘边,大人牵着手,走在安全的干地上。”
- “只要有水,就要有大人近身看护。”
Choose one or two prompts:
- “浴缸旁边的大人在哪里?”
- “哪张图是池塘?”
- “水边要和谁在一起?”
If Amara points to the adult, add the rule: “对,水边要有大人。”
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes, focused on listening, pointing, and safe gestures.
| English | Meaning | Response |
|---|---|---|
bath | 浴缸 | Point to bath |
pool | 泳池 | Point to pool |
pond | 池塘 | Point to pond |
adult | 大人 | Point to the close adult |
stay close | 靠近 | Move beside the adult |
hold hands | 牵手 | Offer one relaxed hand |
Use short chunks:
An adult stays close.Stay with me.Hold my hand.Water means adult.Stop and wait.
Accept a look, point, movement, sound, or one word. Do not ask for translation or recitation.
3. Early Math: Ring, Towels, Drops
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Use only the bottom cards:
- Under 1, touch the one life ring picture once and say
one ring. - Under 2, touch the two separate towels one at a time and say
one, two. - Under 3, touch the three separate water drops one at a time and say
one, two, three.
Do not count people, waves, or water in the upper cards. The life ring is a counting picture, not a replacement for an adult or approved safety equipment. Do not test numeral recognition.
4. Safety Movement: Come Close
Time: 3–5 minutes on a dry, clear floor.
- The adult says
Stop and wait. - Amara pauses or looks towards the adult.
- The adult says
Stay with me. - Amara may move beside the adult or offer a hand.
One look or one step is enough. Do not practise beside real water.
5. Life Skill: Active Adult Supervision
Time: 3–5 minutes of adult preparation during a normal routine.
The adult prepares everything before bath time, keeps the toddler within arm's reach, and drains water immediately after use. Near pools, ponds, buckets, toilets, fountains, or other water, the adult stays close and attentive.
Water Safety
A toddler is never left alone in or near water, not even briefly and not with an older child. The adult remains within arm's reach and watches continuously without phone distraction. Float toys, bath seats, life ring pictures, and swimming lessons do not replace active adult supervision. Empty water containers after use and restrict access to water areas.
Bedtime Recall
- “今天每一张水边图片里都有谁?”
- “池塘边怎么和大人在一起?”
Bath, pool, or pond?Stay close or hold hands?
Keep it relaxed. Amara may answer with a point, step towards the adult, hand gesture, sound, or one word.
