Matching Pairs
Matching Pairs
Today we notice socks, mittens, and shoes, then look for two pictures that are the same and belong together as a pair.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 3 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, touching two pictures, bringing two hands together, or saying one word all count as meaningful responses. This is gentle visual noticing, not a matching test. Do not require reading, perfect explanations, or finishing every pair.

How to use it
Use only this A4 picture, printed or displayed full-screen. First find the single sock, mitten, and shoe. Then notice the two matching socks, one mitten pair, and two matching shoes. Count only the bottom row: one hat, two individual socks, and three shirts. Reading the labels is not required.
Goals
- English: meet
sock, mitten, shoe, same, pair, andmatch. - Cognition: notice two pictured objects that share visible features without right-or-wrong pressure.
- Early math: count one hat, two individual socks, and three shirts.
- Movement: use the two hands to show “together” and “apart”.
- Life skills: hear calm pairing language during dressing without being asked to organise independently.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- A clear place for small hand movements.
No loose socks, shoes, cards, puzzle pieces, or other teaching objects are needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Describe one card at a time:
- “这是一只袜子。”
- “这是一只手套。”
- “这是一只鞋。”
- “两只黄袜子看起来一样。”
- “两只蓝手套是一对。”
- “两只红鞋可以配一配。”
Choose only one or two prompts:
- “袜子在哪里?”
- “哪两个看起来一样?”
- “你想找手套,还是鞋子?”
If Amara chooses an unexpected pair, describe what she noticed: “你把两个蓝色的放在一起了。” Then model the pictured pair once without saying she is wrong.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
| English | Meaning | Picture response |
|---|---|---|
sock | 袜子 | Point to the green sock |
mitten | 手套 | Point to the blue mitten |
shoe | 鞋子 | Point to the red shoe |
same | 一样 | Touch the two yellow socks |
pair | 一对 | Touch the two blue mittens |
match | 配一配 | Touch the two red shoes |
Model:
A sock.A mitten.A shoe.They are the same.A pair.They match.
Say one line, then wait. A look, point, hand movement, sound, or one word is enough; do not require a complete sentence.
3. Early Math: One Hat, Two Socks, Three Shirts
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Use only the bottom row:
- Under 1, touch the one hat once:
one hat. - Under 2, touch the two socks one at a time:
one, two. - Under 3, touch the three shirts one at a time:
one, two, three.
The bottom shows two individual socks, not two pairs. Count each whole shirt once; do not count stripes, sleeves, bows, or printed numerals.
4. Movement: Together and Apart
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Move away from the screen:
- Hold two open hands apart.
- Bring them gently near each other and say
pair. - Let the hands rest together for
same. - Separate and relax them on
all done.
Touching palms is optional. Approximate movement is enough and does not need correction.
Clothing and Movement Safety
This lesson uses pictures only. Do not scatter clothing, ask Amara to remove shoes while standing, or give small clips, buttons, or fasteners for matching. Real dressing stays adult-supported, and mismatched clothing is not treated as a mistake or a problem.
5. Everyday Connection
During dressing that is already happening, describe one natural pair:
- “这里有两只袜子。”
A pair of shoes.- “它们看起来一样。”
The adult handles the rest of the routine. Do not delay leaving, repeat the matching task, or judge speed and accuracy.
Bedtime Recall
Same or different?Sock, mitten, or shoe?
Point to a pictured answer instead of asking repeatedly.
