Hot & Cold Safety
Hot & Cold Safety
Today we use pictures of hot, warm, and cold things to practise three protective responses: stop, ask an adult, and keep hands off. Every hot source in the poster is controlled by an adult.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 3–4 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, holding up a hand, stepping back, making a sound, or saying one word all count as meaningful responses. This is not a temperature test; the adult supplies the words and manages every real source of heat.

How to use it
Print in colour on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page” selected, or show it full-screen. Point to hot, warm, and cold, then follow the three safety cards: stop, ask an adult, hands off. Count only the bottom row. Amara does not need to read, memorise the labels, touch anything to check it, or answer every prompt.
Goals
- Chinese: understand 热, 温, 冷, 停, 问大人, and 不触碰 through pictures and calm adult language.
- English: meet
hot, warm, cold, stop, ask an adult, andhands off. - Early math: touch exactly one oven mitt, two ice cubes, and three snowflakes in the bottom row.
- Movement: copy a small stop hand, step-back gesture, and hands-away pose.
- Life skills: wait while an adult checks food, water, cookware, or another possible heat source.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- No hot, warm, cold, cooking, or ice object is needed for this lesson.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Describe one card at a time:
- “热水壶是热的,只能由大人来操作。”
- “软软的毛毯让人觉得温暖,它不是烫的锅具。”
- “冰块是冷的,今天只看图片,不用手摸。”
- “不确定时先停下来,问大人,不触碰。”
Choose one or two prompts:
- “哪张图是热的?”
- “毛毯看起来温暖吗?”
- “看到热的东西,小手怎么做?”
If Amara raises a hand or steps back, name the response: “你停下来了。” A look or point is enough.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes, focused on listening, pointing, and gestures.
| English | Meaning | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
hot | 热 | Point while staying back |
warm | 温暖 | Point to the blanket |
cold | 冷 | Point to the ice picture |
stop | 停 | Hold up one relaxed hand |
ask an adult | 问大人 | Look towards the adult |
hands off | 不触碰 | Place both hands by the body |
Use short chunks:
Hot. Stop.Ask an adult.Hands off.The blanket is warm. The ice is cold.
Say one chunk, pause, and accept a look, point, action, sound, or one word. Do not ask Amara to translate or repeat a list.
3. Early Math: One, Two, Three
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Use only the bottom cards:
- Under 1, touch the one oven mitt once and say
one mitt. - Under 2, touch the two separate ice cubes one at a time and say
one, two. - Under 3, touch the three separate snowflakes one at a time and say
one, two, three.
Do not count steam, people, counters, or the cold pictures above. These are pictures only; do not offer real ice or cookware. The aim is one finger touch for one pictured item, not numeral recognition.
4. Safety Movement: Stop, Ask, Hands Off
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Move away from the screen:
Stop— hold up one relaxed hand.- Step back one small step with the adult.
Ask an adult— turn the head towards the adult.Hands off— place both hands comfortably by the body.
Practise only with empty hands in a clear space. One small gesture is enough.
5. Everyday Connection: The Adult Checks
Time: 3–5 minutes during a routine that is already happening.
The adult may say:
- “先别碰,大人检查。”
Wait. I will check.Hot. Hands off.
The adult checks food, bath water, taps, heaters, cookware, and appliances before the child is near them. Amara can wait in a safe place; she never needs to test temperature with her hand.
Heat Safety
All hot food, drinks, water, cookware, appliances, and other heat sources stay under adult control and out of reach. A toddler must never touch a hot source to find out whether it is safe. Keep cords and handles inaccessible, use barriers or distance, and seek appropriate first aid or medical advice for any burn.
Bedtime Recall
- “今天看到热的东西时,先做什么?”
- “哪张图是温暖的毛毯?”
Hot, warm, or cold?Stop or hands off?
Keep it conversational. Amara may answer with a point, stop hand, sound, or one word.
