Busy Hands
Busy Hands
Today we notice hand, finger, and palm, then explore open, close, and tap. Every action uses empty hands and stays gentle, away from small objects and hazardous surfaces.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 3 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, opening a hand once, tapping a palm, or saying one word all count as meaningful responses. Do not test reading, quiz finger counting, or correct hand form.

How to use it
Use only this A4 picture, printed or displayed full-screen. Notice HAND 手, FINGER 手指, and PALM 手掌, then follow OPEN 张开, CLOSE 合拢, and TAP 轻轻点. Finish by counting only the bottom row: one open hand, two pointing hands, and three open palms.
Goals
- English: meet
hand, finger, palm, open, close, andtap. - Body awareness and fine motor skills: notice hand parts and choose one slow movement.
- Early math: touch and count one hand, two pointing hands, and three palms along the bottom.
- Life skills: pause hands near doors, drawers, hot items, or sockets and seek a familiar adult.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- A place with space between hands, furniture, and other people.
No block, bean, peg, scissors, or other teaching object is needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Choose only one or two prompts:
- “手掌在哪里?”
- “哪张图的小手张开了?”
- “你想张开、合拢,还是轻轻点?”
If Amara only looks, describe the picture without positioning her hands.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
| English | Meaning | Picture or action response |
|---|---|---|
hand | 手 | Point to one complete hand |
finger | 手指 | Point to the single raised finger |
palm | 手掌 | Point to the open palm |
open | 张开 | Open a hand voluntarily |
close | 合拢 | Close the fingers softly |
tap | 轻轻点 | Tap the other palm gently |
Model:
A hand.One finger.Open. Close.Tap gently.
Say one short chunk at a time. Looking, pointing, or doing one action is enough.
3. Early Math: One Hand, Two Pointing Hands, Three Palms
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Use only the bottom row:
- Touch the one open hand once:
one hand. - Touch the two pointing hands one at a time:
one, two. - Touch the three open palms one at a time:
one, two, three.
Count each complete hand once. Do not add individual fingers to the quantity, and do not test numeral recognition.
4. Safe Movement: Open, Close, Tap
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Keep both hands in front of the body and choose one or two:
- Slowly open the fingers:
Open. - Close them into a soft, loose fist:
Close. - Tap the centre of the other palm once:
Tap. - Relax both hands and stop.
Hand Safety
Do not hit, pinch, or poke anyone. Keep fingers out of eyes, nose, mouth, door gaps, drawers, sockets, and moving parts. A grown-up handles hot, sharp, or broken objects.
5. Life Skill: Pause the Hands
When a door, drawer, or adult-operated item naturally appears, model briefly:
- “小手停一下。”
Hands pause.- Bring hands back near the body and look towards a familiar adult.
Do not repeatedly open or close something to create practice.
Bedtime Recall
Open, close, or tap?- “小手什么时候要先停下来?”
