More & Finished
More & Finished
Today we connect a book, song, and play with three useful messages: more, again, and finished. Ending an optional activity is accepted immediately.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 3 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, reaching, resting the hands, turning away, or saying one word all count as meaningful responses. Finished is as valid as more or again. Do not bargain for one extra turn, test reading, or require a standard gesture.

How to use it
Use only this A4 picture, printed or displayed full-screen. First notice the book, song, and calm picture play. Then point to more, again, and finished, observing that the adult puts the book away when the child is finished. Count only the bottom row: one drum, two books, and three balls. Reading or repeating the labels is not required.
Goals
- Chinese: understand 书, 歌, 玩 and 还要, 再来一次, 结束.
- English: meet
book, song, play, more, again, andfinished. - Social-emotional learning: communicate continuing or ending an optional activity and have that signal respected.
- Early math: count one drum, two books, and three balls.
- Movement: copy one small more, again, or resting-hands gesture.
- Life skills: take part in a clear, calm transition out of play.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- A calm place for small hand gestures.
No drum, ball, book, music player, timer, or other teaching object is needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Describe one card at a time:
- “这里有一本书、一首歌和一个看图游戏。”
- “小朋友还想看,可以表示‘还要’。”
- “还想做一次,可以表示‘再来一次’。”
- “小朋友想结束,大人马上把书收好。”
Choose only one or two prompts:
- “书在哪里?”
- “哪张图表示再来一次?”
- “哪张图表示结束?”
If Amara turns away or rests her hands, say: “你表示结束了,我们停下来。” Do not ask for one more response.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
| English | Meaning | Picture or response |
|---|---|---|
book | 书 | Point to the picture book |
song | 歌 | Point to the singing picture |
play | 玩 | Point to the picture-card play |
more | 还要 | Point towards the book |
again | 再来一次 | Copy one gentle clap |
finished | 结束 | Rest the hands or turn away |
Model:
More, please.Again?Finished.You are finished. We can stop.
Say one line and wait. A look, gesture, movement away, or partial word is enough; silence may also mean the activity should pause.
3. Early Math: One Drum, Two Books, Three Balls
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Use only the bottom row:
- Under 1, touch the one drum once:
one drum. - Under 2, touch the two books one at a time:
one, two. - Under 3, touch the three balls one at a time:
one, two, three.
The first card contains one drum only. Count each whole object once; do not count drum patterns, book-cover pictures, ball dots, or printed numerals.
4. Movement: Continue or Rest
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Move away from the screen:
- Reach one relaxed empty hand slightly forwards for
more. - Make one gentle clap for
again. - Rest both hands near the body for
finished. - The adult stops immediately and says,
We can stop.
Amara may use her own signal instead. No gesture needs to be repeated.
Respecting Finished
Use these messages only in optional play, songs, or shared reading. When Amara says, signs, or shows finished, stop without bargaining, tickling, restraint, or “one more” practice. Necessary care and safety transitions remain adult responsibilities and are handled calmly, not disguised as optional play.
5. Everyday Connection
During one naturally occurring optional activity:
- Ask once:
More or finished? - Wait for a look, gesture, word, or movement away.
- If the answer is
finished, end and begin the next calm routine.
Do not use food as the teaching material or pressure Amara to continue for praise.
Bedtime Recall
- “今天什么时候表示还要?”
- “结束时,大人做了什么?”
More, again, or finished?- “不想继续时可以怎样表示?”
Model the finished picture; do not restart the activity.
