Seaside Finds
Today we look at a shell, seaweed, and rock while practising three seaside rules: stay close to the adult, leave objects where they are, and stay out of the water.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 3–4 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, holding an adult's hand, keeping hands back, making a sound, or saying one word all count as meaningful responses. The poster is enough; no seaside trip or collecting activity is required.

How to use it
Print in colour on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page” selected, or show it full-screen. Find the shell, seaweed, and rock. Then point to stay close, leave it, and stay dry. Count only the bottom row. Amara does not need to read, touch or collect an item, go near water, or answer every prompt.
Goals
- Chinese: understand 贝壳, 海藻, 石头, 靠近大人, 不捡, and 不下水 through pictures.
- English: meet
shell,seaweed,rock,stay close,leave it, andstay dry. - Early math: touch exactly one shell, two seaweed fronds, and three smooth stones in the bottom row.
- Movement: practise hand-holding, bringing hands back, and stopping on dry pretend ground.
- Safety: remain beside an adult, avoid sharp objects, and never enter the water for this activity.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- No sand, shell, seaweed, stone, water, collecting bag, or trip is needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Describe one picture at a time:
- “这是一个完整的贝壳，今天只看图片。”
- “这是海藻，海边看到也先不拿。”
- “这是光滑石头，真实物品仍由大人判断。”
- “海边和大人靠近，尖的东西不捡，也不下水。”
Choose one or two prompts:
- “贝壳在哪里？”
- “哪张图是海藻？”
- “看到破碎尖锐的东西，怎么做？”
If Amara brings her hand back, respond: “你让它留在原地了。”
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes, focused on listening, pointing, and safety gestures.

Use short chunks:

Accept a look, point, action, sound, or one word. Do not require translation or repetition.
3. Early Math: Shell, Seaweed, Stones
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Use only the bottom cards:
- Under 1, touch the one smooth shell once and say
one shell. - Under 2, touch the two separate seaweed fronds one at a time and say
one, two. - Under 3, touch the three separate smooth stones one at a time and say
one, two, three.
Do not count ridges, seaweed blades, people, or objects in the upper cards. These are counting pictures, not items to collect. Do not test numeral recognition.
4. Safety Movement: Close, Leave, Dry
Time: 3–5 minutes on a clear indoor floor.
Stay close— stand beside the adult and offer a hand.Leave it— reach towards an imaginary picture, then bring the hand back before touching.Stay dry— stop before an imaginary shoreline.- Take two slow steps away together.
Do not practise near real water or with a sharp object. One gesture is enough.
5. Everyday Connection: Adult Chooses the Place
Time: 3–5 minutes only if a seaside visit is already planned.
The adult checks weather, tide, access, footwear, boundaries, and local warnings; chooses a dry place well back from waves; and maintains hand-holding or another close physical connection. Picture-only learning is the default.
Seaside Safety
A toddler stays immediately beside a supervising adult. Do not pick up broken shells, glass, hooks, metal, sharp stones, unknown animals, or other beach debris. Do not enter the sea, paddle, climb rocks, or turn away from waves for this activity. Water and waves can change suddenly; follow local closures and lifeguard instructions.
Bedtime Recall
- “今天看到了贝壳、海藻和什么？”
- “尖的东西留在哪里？”

Keep it conversational. Amara may answer with a point, hand-back gesture, hand-holding, sound, or one word.
