Morning Steps
Morning Steps
Today we connect bed, towel, and shirt with three common morning steps: wake up, wash face, and get dressed. Family routines may use a different order, and one manageable act of participation is enough.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 3 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, moving a finger through a sequence, doing one life-skill action, or saying one word all count as meaningful responses. Do not test reading, require a fixed routine from memory, or rush her.

How to use it
Use only this A4 picture, printed or displayed full-screen. Notice BED 床, TOWEL 毛巾, and SHIRT 上衣, then connect them with WAKE UP 起床, WASH FACE 洗脸, and GET DRESSED 穿衣. Finish by counting only the bottom row: one bed, two folded towels, and three shirts.
Goals
- Chinese: understand 床, 毛巾, 上衣, 起床, 洗脸, and 穿衣.
- English: meet
bed, towel, shirt, wake up,wash face, andget dressed. - Sequencing: notice that routine steps can follow one another while allowing real families to use a different order.
- Early math: touch and count one bed, two towels, and three shirts along the bottom.
- Life skills: choose one safe step during a real morning routine.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- A dry, uncluttered place to look.
No extra bed, towel, clothing, or other teaching object is needed for the picture activity.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
- “床是睡觉和醒来的地方。”
- “这是柔软的毛巾。”
- “这是一件上衣。”
- “小朋友醒来坐好,轻轻洗脸,再在熟悉成人帮助下穿衣。”
Choose only one or two prompts:
- “哪一张是床?”
- “洗脸时看到了什么?”
- “你想指起床、洗脸,还是穿衣?”
There is no need to memorise all three or treat the poster order as the only correct routine.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
| English | Meaning | Picture response |
|---|---|---|
bed | 床 | Point to the low bed |
towel | 毛巾 | Point to the folded towel |
shirt | 上衣 | Point to the blue shirt |
wake up | 起床 | Point to the child sitting up |
wash face | 洗脸 | Point to the gentle cheek wipe |
get dressed | 穿衣 | Point to the dressing action |
Model:
Wake up.Wash face.Get dressed.One step is enough.
Say one short chunk at a time. Looking, pointing, or producing part of a word is enough.
3. Early Math: One Bed, Two Towels, Three Shirts
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Use only the bottom row:
- Touch the one bed once:
one bed. - Touch the two folded towels one at a time:
one, two. - Touch the three shirts one at a time:
one, two, three.
Treat each folded towel icon as one complete towel. Do not count folds, sleeves, bed legs, or printed numerals.
4. Picture Sequence: Choose Two or Three
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Move one finger only on the poster:
- Move from
WAKE UPtoWASH FACE. - Continue to
GET DRESSED. - Amara may choose only one card or show that her household uses another order.
Do not time the sequence or require first/second/third language.
Morning-Routine Safety
Do not jump on or from a bed or other raised surface. An adult checks water temperature and amount. Keep a towel away from covering the eyes, nose, and mouth, and help with tight neck openings, zips, or tangled fabric. Do not rush through the room.
5. Everyday Life: Join One Step
When the real morning routine naturally occurs, invite once:
- Say “起床了” after sitting steadily; or
- Wipe one cheek gently; or
- Place one hand into a loose sleeve.
After one small step, Amara may stop while the adult helps with the rest. Do not lay out extra items to create practice.
Bedtime Recall
- “今天看到了床、毛巾还是上衣?”
- “哪张图是洗脸?”
Wake up, wash face, or get dressed?- “今天早晨你参与了哪一步?”
