The Colour Train
Today we ride a red, yellow, and blue train. Looking, pointing, choosing, and moving connect each Chinese and English colour word to a clear picture and action.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 4 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, touching, choosing, moving, or saying one word all count as meaningful responses. Colour-name mix-ups and silent responses are common at this age. Model the word naturally without testing reading or asking the same question repeatedly.

How to use it
Print in colour on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page” selected. If a printer is unavailable, show it full-screen on a tablet or computer. Guide Amara through a short sequence: look at the trains, find a colour, point to each train from left to right, and become a moving train. She does not need to read the Chinese or English labels.
Goals
- Chinese: hear 红色, 黄色, and 蓝色 in the train story, then respond with a point, choice, movement, or short word.
- English: meet
red,yellow, andbluethrough the picture and games. - Early learning: notice differences among the three colours and try finding the colour an adult has just named.
- Movement: point to the trains from left to right and practise walking forwards, stopping, and turning slowly.

Materials
- The A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- A clear space for a few safe steps and a slow turn.
No colour cards, toy trains, blocks, or other objects are needed.
1. Morning Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Let Amara look freely. Describe whichever part first catches her attention:
- “红色的小火车开来了。”
- “这是黄色小火车，亮亮的。”
- “蓝色小火车在这里。”
Choose only one or two prompts:
- “红色在哪里？”
- “你想坐黄色小火车，还是蓝色小火车？”
- “哪一辆小火车和这个颜色一样？”
- “小火车要先去哪里？”
If she points without speaking, respond with “你选了蓝色小火车。”
If she calls yellow red, do not ask her to try again. Simply model “这是黄色，黄色小火车。”
Today's Original Mini Story
The colour train is ready to leave.
The red train calls, “I am first—choo-choo!”
The yellow train carries warm sunshine, and the blue train carries the blue sky.
All three trains line up and travel slowly across an imaginary bridge.
At the station they cheer, “Red, yellow, and blue arrived safely!”
Point to the trains from left to right as you tell the story, treating the track and bridge as make-believe beyond the picture. Let Amara take over if she wishes; she does not need to retell it.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes, focused on listening, pointing, and choosing.

Do not require translation, a memorised sequence, or a complete sentence. A look, point, touch, or single colour word is enough.
3. Thinking Game: Help the Train Find a Colour
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Find One Colour at a Time
- Point to red and name it: “红色。” Pause and let Amara look.
- Say “黄色在哪里？” and wait while she searches; add a gesture only if needed.
- When she finds blue, expand her response: “对，蓝色小火车。”
- Let her choose one colour, then follow her finger and “drive” the train there.
A Short Colour Sequence
- On the first turn, give only one word: “红色。”
- On another turn, offer two actions: “先点黄色，再点蓝色。”
- If she completes only the first action, acknowledge what she understood before moving on.
Add Counting If She Wants
- On the bottom row, touch one red train and say
one. - Touch the two yellow trains one at a time and say
one, two. - Touch the three blue trains one at a time and say
one, two, three.
Add this only while Amara wants to continue. Match one touch to one train and one number word; she does not need to count independently.
The aim is shared attention, listening for a word, finding a picture, and making a choice. Do not hide the picture to test memory, demand a fixed order, or test the printed labels.
4. Gross Motor Play: Become a Train
Time: 3–8 minutes.
Choose a train colour on the picture, then move to a safe space:
- Bend arms beside the body, walk slowly, and say “嘟嘟，小火车出发。”
- Say
Goand walk three to five steps together; sayStopand stand still. - Arrive at an imaginary red, yellow, or blue station, then point to the chosen colour on the picture.
- At the last stop, turn around slowly once and say “小火车回来了。”
Movement Safety
Only walk a few steps; speed is not the aim. Turn slowly and stop after one circle. End the game if Amara becomes unsteady, over-excited, or unwilling. With a screen, look first and place the device safely before moving—never run towards it.
5. Outdoor Observation
Add one relaxed 3–8 minute colour search to normal outdoor play:
- Model first: “我看到一辆红色的车。”
- Look for yellow on a flower, clothes, sign, or vehicle.
- Look up for blue sky; on an overcast day, simply say “今天的天空是灰灰的。”
- Let Amara choose which colour to look for next.
Observe without collecting objects. Hold hands and stay well away from traffic when looking at vehicles or signals. Return to child-led outdoor play afterwards.
6. Life Skills: The Train Arrives
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Invite Amara to complete one or two steps:
- Return the A4 teaching picture to its folder or usual place.
- Walk to the handwashing area.
- Dry her hands after washing.
- Bring her own cup and drink water.
Use short prompts:
- “小火车进站啦。”
- “教学图回家。”

Keep it conversational rather than testing:
