Long & Short
Today we notice long, short, and the same length. We compare, point, and match from a shared starting point without using a ruler or measurement units.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 4 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, tracing a ribbon, choosing, or saying one word all count as meaningful responses. Align one end before comparing length. This is not a measurement lesson, and there is no reading, unit, or numeral test.

How to use it
Use only this A4 picture, printed or displayed full-screen. Read the top labels as LONG 长, SHORT 短, and SAME LENGTH 一样长, then notice the long ribbon, short ribbon, and two same-length green ribbons. In the middle, see how ribbons begin at the same orange line before comparing, pointing to the longer one, or matching equal lengths. Finish by counting one long ribbon, two short ribbons, and three equal-length sticks along the bottom.

Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- A clear place to move the arms safely.
No ribbon, string, stick, ruler, or other teaching object is needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Begin with the top row:
- “蓝色彩带比较长。”
- “红色彩带比较短。”
- “两条绿色彩带从同一个起点出发，终点也一样，所以一样长。”
Then notice the middle:
- “比一比时，先把起点对齐。”
- “这只手指向较长的蓝色彩带。”
- “两条一样长的蓝色彩带可以配一配。”
Choose only one or two prompts:
- “哪一条比较长？”
- “哪一条比较短？”
- “哪两条一样长？”
- “比较前，先把哪里对齐？”
If Amara only points, expand it: “你指了较长的彩带。” A comparison sentence is not required.
Today's Original Mini Story
A blue ribbon and red ribbon want to compare.
First, they place their starting ends on the same line.
The blue ribbon reaches farther, so it is longer; the red one is shorter.
Two green ribbons share a start and finish, so they are the same length.
Looking and pointing make the difference clear.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.

Say one line at a time. Looking, pointing, or saying one word is enough; translation and complete repetition are not required.
3. Early Math: One Long, Two Short, Three Equal
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Use only the bottom row:
- Touch the one long ribbon under 1 once:
one long ribbon. - Touch the two short ribbons under 2 one at a time:
one, two. - Touch the three equal-length sticks under 3 one at a time:
one, two, three.
After counting the sticks, notice that they share a start and finish. Keep quantity and length separate: having three sticks does not make each one “long”.
4. Movement: Draw a Long and Short Line
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Move away from the screen and draw in the air:
- Begin at one imaginary starting point and trace a long line slowly.
- Return to the same start and trace a short line.
- The adult traces one length; Amara may make an approximate
match. - Let her choose
longorshortand follow her lead.
Keep the range comfortable; exact matching is not expected.
Long-Object Safety
This lesson does not use real string, ribbon, or cord, avoiding wrapping around the neck, fingers, or furniture. The picture and air movements are enough. Leave space between outstretched arms, furniture, screens, and other people.
5. Everyday Observation
Use one comparison that appears naturally:
- During dressing, notice whether two sleeves are about the same length.
- Notice a long corridor and a shorter passage.
- Align one edge of two books before describing their lengths.
Do not gather extra objects for the lesson or introduce centimetres, metres, or other units.
6. Life Skill: Align, Then Look
Time: 3–5 minutes.
When putting A4 pages away, gently align one edge of two same-size pages:
- Say, “先把这一边对齐。”
- Look together to see whether the page edges are the same length.
- Watching or holding one corner counts as participation.
Perfect alignment is not required, and the result is not used to judge Amara.
Bedtime Recall
- “今天哪条彩带比较长？”
- “一样长的彩带从哪里开始？”
Long, short, or the same length?- “今天有没有用尺子？”
Answer together: “没有，我们只是比一比。”
