Mealtime Helper
Mealtime Helper
Today we first meet a bowl, spoon, and cup in the picture. We pretend to eat, drink, and wipe before connecting the words naturally to a real meal.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 4 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, pretending, making a sound, or saying one word all count as meaningful responses. The picture activity uses no real food and never tests reading. During a real meal, an adult supervises throughout; safety and a positive self-feeding experience matter more than perfect movements.

How to use it
Use only this A4 picture, printed or displayed full-screen. Look at BOWL, SPOON, and CUP along the top. Point to EAT, DRINK, and WIPE in the middle and pretend with empty hands. Finish by counting one bowl, two spoons, and three cups along the bottom. Reading is not required. Save real eating and drinking for a normal seated meal.
Goals
- English: meet
bowl, spoon, cup, eat, drink, andwipe. - Thinking: connect tableware with familiar mealtime actions and notice a simple meal routine.
- Early math: count the one bowl, two spoons, and three cups pictured at the bottom.
- Movement and life skills: pretend to scoop, hold a cup with both hands, and wipe, then attempt one manageable step during a real meal.
Materials
- For the picture activity, only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- Real tableware and food appear only during the day's normal meal; they are not added as lesson props.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Begin with the three top cards:
- “这是碗,可以装合适的食物。”
- “这是勺子,可以帮助我们舀一舀。”
- “这是杯子,可以用来喝水。”
Then notice the middle actions:
- “吃,嘴巴慢慢嚼。”
- “喝,小口喝。”
- “擦,把嘴边或桌上的一点点东西擦干净。”
Choose only one or two prompts:
- “碗在哪里?”
- “你想先指勺子,还是杯子?”
- “哪一格是在喝?”
- “吃完以后可以做什么?”
If Amara only pretends, expand the action: “你在假装喝水。” She does not need to say all six words.
Today's Original Mini Story
At mealtime, a little helper sits steadily first.
The bowl is on the table, the spoon is ready, and the cup is stable.
The helper eats slowly and takes a small drink.
A little spill appears, so the adult and child wipe together.
When the meal is finished, the helper stops and the table is tidy again.
During picture time, only pretend. Do not bring out empty dishes to pressure Amara into performing a meal.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Words
| English | Meaning | Picture or pretend action |
|---|---|---|
| bowl | 碗 | Point to the bowl at the top |
| spoon | 勺子 | Point to the spoon at the top |
| cup | 杯子 | Point to the cup at the top |
| eat | 吃 | Move an empty hand once towards the mouth |
| drink | 喝 | Shape both hands around an imaginary cup near the mouth |
| wipe | 擦 | Move one palm gently across the air |
Model:
Show me the bowl.Point to the spoon.Where is the cup?Eat slowly.Drink, please.Let's wipe.
Translation and full repetition are not required. A point, pretend action, or single word is enough.
3. Early Math: Count the Tableware
Time: 3–5 minutes.
The bottom row shows:
- One bowl: touch once and say
one bowl. - Two spoons: touch each one and say
one, two. - Three cups: touch each one and say
one, two, three.
Touch each item once. Offer one choice question, such as “两把勺子在哪里?” Do not test numeral recognition or arrange real tableware into matching quantities.
4. Movement: Empty-Hand Mealtime Actions
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Sit or stand steadily and choose two or three actions:
- Curve both arms into a circle for
bowl. - Make one slow, small scooping movement for
spoonandeat. - Hold an imaginary cup with two hands near the mouth for
cupanddrink. - Move one palm gently sideways once for
wipe. - On
Stop, return both hands in front of the body.
Pretend-Play Safety
During picture time, never put the paper, fingers, or another non-food object into the mouth. Keep movements slow, do not tip the head back to imitate gulping, and do not walk while pretending to eat or drink.
5. Real-Life Observation
At a normal meal, connect the picture naturally:
- “这是你的碗,和图上的
bowl一样是碗。” - “你在用勺子,
spoon。”
drink。”
wipe。”
Do not ask repeated questions while Amara is hungry, tired, or chewing. A meal is not a language test.
6. Life Skill: One Safe Mealtime Step
Time: part of the normal meal, with any single prompt kept within 3–8 minutes.
With close adult supervision, invite one step:
- Sit steadily while the food is placed.
- Hold the spoon and scoop one small bite of suitable food.
- Steady the cup with both hands and take a small drink.
- Wipe the mouth or a small spill with a napkin.
Real-Mealtime Safety
An adult stays close and supervises all real eating and drinking. Amara remains seated and does not walk, run, or play while eating. The adult checks temperature and prepares food in a size and texture appropriate for her chewing skills, avoiding known choking hazards. Do not hand her a hot bowl or cup. Stop immediately and let the adult respond if she coughs, chokes, or shows clear distress.
Bedtime Recall
Bowl, spoon, or cup?- “餐桌上有一点洒出来,可以做什么?”
