Pattern Parade
Pattern Parade
Today we notice three simple AB patterns: red–blue, circle–square, and clap–stomp. The adult demonstrates each complete ABAB pattern, while Amara may watch, point, copy one part, or join the repeating movement.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 4 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. At this age, shared rhythm and imitation matter more than predicting an answer. Do not cover an item and ask “What comes next?” as a test. Say and show the next item yourself, then invite Amara to join if she wishes.

How to use it
Print in colour on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page” selected, or show it full-screen. Begin with the three examples at the top, then point to copy, next, and again. At the bottom, trace each numbered strip from left to right and model its complete ABAB sequence. The numerals 1, 2, and 3 label the strips; they do not tell Amara how many objects to count.
Goals
- Chinese: hear 红—蓝, 圆—方, 拍手—跺脚 and 模仿, 下一个, 再来 in meaningful picture talk.
- English: meet
red–blue, circle–square, clap–stomp, copy, next, andagain. - Early math and cognition: notice that an AB pair can repeat as ABAB without being asked to infer the missing item.
- Movement: copy a gentle clap–stomp–clap–stomp rhythm with adult support.
- Life skills: take part in a short back-and-forth imitation game and communicate when she wants to continue or stop.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- A clear, non-slip place for one gentle clap-and-stomp pattern.
No colour cards, shape blocks, or pattern pieces are needed.
1. Morning Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Point slowly from left to right and describe the pairs:
- “红色、蓝色,是一对颜色。”
- “圆形、正方形,是一对形状。”
- “先拍手,再跺脚,是一对动作。”
- “这一对再来一次,就变成红、蓝、红、蓝。”
Choose only one or two prompts:
- “红色在哪里?蓝色在哪里?”
- “你想看圆形,还是正方形?”
- “成人先拍手,伊伊想不想模仿?”
- “我们慢慢再来一次。”
Avoid asking Amara to guess. Instead of “下一个是什么?”, say “下一个是蓝色,我指给你看。”
Today's Original Mini Story
The pattern parade is ready. Red walks beside blue: red, blue, red, blue. Circle follows square: circle, square, circle, square. Then two little feet join two little hands: clap, stomp, clap, stomp. The parade says, “Copy, next, and again!”
Trace one complete strip while telling its line. Amara may listen without repeating any of it.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes, focused on listening, pointing, and copying.
Words and Chunks
| English | Meaning | Adult model |
|---|---|---|
| red–blue | 红—蓝 | Point to red, then blue |
| circle–square | 圆—方 | Point to circle, then square |
| clap–stomp | 拍手—跺脚 | Clap once, then stomp gently |
| copy | 模仿 | Copy one simple action |
| next | 下一个 | Point to the following item |
| again | 再来 | Repeat the same pair |
Use short natural phrases:
Red, blue, red, blue.Circle, square, circle, square.Clap, stomp, clap, stomp.Copy me.Next is blue.Again!
Play:
- Adult points through
Red, blue, red, blue. - Adult points through
Circle, square, circle, square. - Say
Copy me.and clap once. - Model
Clap, stomp, clap, stomp.slowly, accepting any partial response.
Do not require translation, full repetition, or an independent prediction.
3. Early Math and Cognition: See ABAB
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Use the three bottom strips as pattern examples:
- Strip 1: red, blue, red, blue.
- Strip 2: circle, square, circle, square.
- Strip 3: clap, stomp, clap, stomp.
For each strip:
- Point to the first A item and name it.
- Point to the B item and name it.
- Continue pointing while the adult says the second A and B.
- Say
Againand trace the same complete strip once more if Amara remains interested.
Pattern, Not Performance
The numbers 1, 2, and 3 are only strip labels; this is not a quantity task. The adult supplies the whole pattern and the word next. Watching without copying, copying only A, or changing the rhythm does not mean Amara has failed.
4. Movement: Clap and Stomp Parade
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Move away from the screen and demonstrate slowly:
- Clap once.
- Stomp one foot gently.
- Clap once again.
- Stomp gently again.
Say clap, stomp, clap, stomp as the actions happen. If stomping is not steady, replace it with a seated foot tap or a gentle march while holding an adult's hand.
5. Everyday Observation
During an ordinary moment, notice one repeated alternation without turning it into a search test:
- Adult takes one step with the left foot, then one with the right: “左、右、左、右。”
- Notice two alternating colours on clothing, a floor border, or another safe visible design.
- Tap knees, then clap, and repeat once.
Describe what is already there. There is no need to arrange objects, complete a worksheet, or ask Amara to find a pattern independently.
Movement Safety
Keep claps comfortable and stomps quiet. Use a dry, non-slip space away from furniture and screens. Stop if Amara becomes unsteady, over-excited, or unwilling.
Bedtime Recall
Keep it playful:
- “今天哪一组会重复?”
- “你喜欢红蓝,还是圆方?”
Clap, stomp, or again?- “成人记得我们一起拍手、跺脚。”
If she does not answer, model one pair and finish there.
