Shadow Match
Shadow Match
Today we look at a coloured cat, duck, and car, then match each one to a clear dark silhouette by noticing its overall outline. At the bottom, we count one car, two ducks, and three cats.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 4 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, tracing an outline, moving, or saying one word all count as meaningful responses. Today is simple shape matching; she does not need to read, remember every label, or explain the science of light and shadows.

How to use it
Use only this A4 picture, printed or displayed full-screen. Name the coloured CAT 猫, DUCK 鸭子, and CAR 汽车 along the top. Look directly below each one at its dark silhouette while following FIND 找一找, POINT 指一指, and MATCH 配一配. Finish by counting only the bottom row. Reading is not required.
Goals
- English: meet
cat, duck, car, find, point, andmatch. - Cognition: compare the overall outline of a coloured object with a dark silhouette.
- Early math: touch and count exactly 1 car, 2 ducks, and 3 cats along the bottom.
- Movement and life skills: copy one familiar movement and notice outlines safely in everyday life.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- A clear, dry space for one or two slow imitation movements.
No toy animals, cars, lamps, flashlights, matching cards, or other lesson objects are needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Begin with the coloured pictures:
- “这是一只橙色小猫。”
- “这是一只黄色小鸭。”
- “这是一辆蓝色汽车。”
Then look at the silhouettes:
- “小猫影子的耳朵和尾巴很容易看见。”
- “小鸭影子有嘴巴、身体和小脚的轮廓。”
- “汽车影子能看到车顶和两个车轮的外形。”
Choose only one or two prompts:
- “小猫的影子在哪里?”
- “你想先指小鸭,还是汽车?”
- “哪一个影子和蓝色汽车配在一起?”
If Amara points without speaking, expand naturally: “对,你找到了汽车的影子。”
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
| English | Meaning | Picture response |
|---|---|---|
cat | 猫 | Point to the orange cat |
duck | 鸭子 | Point to the yellow duck |
car | 汽车 | Point to the blue car |
find | 找一找 | Look across the three silhouettes |
point | 指一指 | Point to one silhouette |
match | 配一配 | Move a finger from a colour picture to its silhouette |
Use short chunks:
Find the cat.Point to the duck.Match the car.The cat and its shadow.
A look, point, finger path, sound, or single word is enough. Do not require translation or a full sentence.
3. Cognition: Look at the Whole Outline
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Choose one coloured object and slowly trace its outside edge in the air above the picture. Then trace the edge of the matching silhouette:
- Look at the whole shape.
- Notice one useful feature, such as the cat's tail, the duck's beak, or the car's wheels.
- Point to the matching silhouette.
- Check by looking back at both pictures.
The printed silhouettes are simplified picture shapes. There is no need to explain how real shadows form or to demand a perfect match explanation.
4. Early Math: Count the Bottom Row
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Count only the bottom quantity cards:
- Touch the 1 car once:
one car. - Touch the 2 ducks one at a time:
one, two. - Touch the 3 cats one at a time:
one, two, three.
Use one number word for one complete animal or vehicle. Do not include the top objects or middle silhouettes in the count, and do not test numeral recognition.
5. Movement: Move and Match
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Move away from the screen before beginning:
- Take two quiet steps like a cat.
- Take two small, steady steps like a duck.
- Hold an imaginary steering wheel and walk slowly like a moving car.
- Adult makes one simple pose; Amara may make the same shape.
Approximate imitation is enough. The goal is noticing and joining, not performing an exact animal movement.
Shadow and Movement Safety
Use a clear, non-slip space and keep every movement slow. During an ordinary walk, never chase a shadow towards roads, stairs, doors, or other hazards. Do not look directly at the sun or use a bright lamp or flashlight near Amara's eyes.
6. Everyday Observation and Life Skills
During a normal walk or indoor transition, notice one safe outline:
- “墙上有一个影子,我们站在这里看。”
- “这个轮廓像不像我们的手?”
Look at the shape.
Keep it brief and child-led. It is fine if no real shadow is visible. At the end, invite Amara to close the picture or return the printed page to its usual place.
Bedtime Recall
Cat, duck, or car?- “明天还想配哪一个?”
If she does not answer, share your own observation rather than repeating the question.
