Day and Night
Day and Night
Today we use one picture to notice the contrast between day and night, connect day and night with wake up, play, and sleep, and act out a simple daily sequence.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 4 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, stretching, pretending to sleep, or saying one word all count as meaningful responses. This is a conversation about familiar routines, not a test of reading, memory, or telling the time.

How to use it
Print in colour on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page” selected, or show it full-screen. Start with whichever side Amara notices. Point, describe, and copy the pictured actions together. She does not need to recognise or read any printed words.
Goals
- Chinese: understand 白天, 夜晚, 起床, 玩, and 睡觉 through the picture and familiar routines.
- English: meet
day, night, wake up,play, andsleepthrough listening and actions. - Early math: experience the sequence first–then–last, then use the bottom row to count one sun, two clouds, and three stars.
- Movement: stretch to wake up, move during play, and curl up or rest to pretend to sleep.
- Life skills: take part in one simple morning or bedtime routine.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- A clear, non-slip space for three gentle actions.
1. Morning Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Let Amara look freely, then describe what she notices:
- “白天亮亮的,我们起床了。”
- “白天可以玩一玩、走一走。”
- “夜晚暗暗的,我们慢慢安静下来。”
- “夜晚到了,该睡觉了。”
Choose only one or two prompts:
- “哪边是白天?哪边是夜晚?”
- “谁起床了?”
- “谁在玩?”
- “谁要睡觉了?”
If she points without speaking, put the words into a short sentence for her: “你找到夜晚了。” If she says only “睡觉”, expand it gently: “对,夜晚睡觉。”
Today's Original Mini Story
The sky grows bright. A little child opens her eyes and stretches: “Wake up!”
During the day, she walks, laughs, and plays.
Later, the sky grows dark. She washes, slows down, and cuddles close.
The little child closes her eyes: “Good night. Time to sleep.”
Pause after each scene so Amara can point or copy the action. The story describes a familiar rhythm; it does not ask her to explain why day and night happen.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes, focused on listening, pointing, and moving.
Words and Chunks
| English | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| day | 白天 | Point to the bright side |
| night | 夜晚 | Point to the dark side |
| wake up | 起床、醒来 | Open arms and stretch |
| play | 玩 | Pat knees or take a few steps |
| sleep | 睡觉 | Put hands by one cheek |
Try these short chunks:
It's daytime.Wake up.Let's play.It's night.Time to sleep.
Play:
- Say
Dayand point to the bright side together. - Say
Wake upand stretch. - Say
Playand move for a few seconds. - Say
Nightand point to the dark side. - Say
Sleepand rest hands by the cheek.
Do not require translation or a complete sentence. A look, point, action, sound, or single word is enough.
3. Early Math: First, Then, Last
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Use the three routine pictures rather than asking Amara to recognise numerals:
- “First, wake up.” Touch the waking scene once.
- “Then, play.” Touch the playing scene once.
- “Last, sleep.” Touch the sleeping scene once.
If Amara changes the order, follow her idea and describe it. Use first, then, and last for time order rather than turning one, two, and three into sequence labels.
Count the Bottom Row
- Touch the one sun and say
one. - Touch the two clouds one at a time and say
one, two. - Touch the three stars one at a time and say
one, two, three.
The sequence activity and quantity activity can be separate. Completing either one is enough.
4. Movement: Live Through a Tiny Day
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Leave the screen in a safe place before moving:
- Curl up small and pretend to sleep.
- Hear
Wake up, open the eyes, and stretch tall. - Hear
Play, walk, sway, or bounce gently. - Hear
Night, slow the body down. - Hear
Sleep, place hands by the cheek and become still for a moment.
Repeat once if she asks. Let her choose how to “play”; there is no need to copy the adult exactly.
Movement Safety
Use a dry, non-slip area without sharp corners. Keep movements slow near furniture or a screen. Pretend sleep happens on the floor or while standing still, never while climbing.
5. Everyday Observation
Choose one naturally occurring moment:
- In daylight, look through a window and say, “白天,亮亮的。
Day.” - After dark, look from a safe indoor place and say, “夜晚,暗暗的。
Night.” - Notice one real routine: “起床以后,我们穿衣服。” or “睡觉以前,我们刷牙。”
Cloudy days can look dim, and rooms can be bright at night. Keep the language flexible: “外面现在是白天” or “外面现在是夜晚,” rather than testing by brightness alone.
6. Life Skills: One Routine Step
Invite Amara to join one or two familiar steps.
Morning:
- Open the curtains with an adult.
- Put on one item of clothing with help.
- Carry her cup to its usual place.
Bedtime:
- Put one item back in its place.
- Wash hands or brush teeth with adult help.
- Choose a comfortable sleeping position.
Use short prompts:
Wake up. Good morning.Playtime is finished.Time to wash.Good night. Time to sleep.
Bedtime Recall
Keep it warm and conversational:
- “白天我们做了什么?”
- “夜晚我们要慢慢做什么?”
Day or night?Wake up, play, or sleep?
If she does not answer, share your own memory: “我记得你今天白天玩得很开心。”
