My Turn, Your Turn
My Turn, Your Turn
Today we meet the language of short, supported turns: my turn, your turn, and wait. We also look at give, take, and share as possible social actions without requiring Amara to hand over a valued object or wait for a long time.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 4 months old. Turn-taking is still developing and needs adult co-regulation. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes and each wait very short. Looking, pointing to herself, opening a hand, copying one gesture, saying one word, or choosing not to give something are all valid responses.

How to use it
Print in colour on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page” selected, or show it full-screen. Start with my turn, your turn, and wait. Then point to give, take, and share while describing what the children are doing. Count only the ball, open hands, and circular arrows in the bottom row. The poster introduces choices and language; it does not create an obligation to share.
Goals
- Chinese: understand 轮到我, 轮到你, 等一等 and 给, 拿, 一起用 through pictures and adult narration.
- English: meet
my turn, your turn, wait, give, take, andshare, plus natural phrases used during a turn. - Early math: touch exactly one ball, two open hands, and three circular turn arrows one at a time.
- Social-emotional development: experience one very short turn with a calm adult who helps her wait.
- Life skills: communicate “mine/not yet/help” through a word, sound, gesture, or movement without being forced to share.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- A clear space for simple pointing and open-hand gestures.
No ball, timer, turn card, or special sharing object is required.
1. Morning Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Describe each picture without asking Amara to perform:
- “这个小朋友指着自己:轮到我。”
- “现在轮到你,可以慢慢来。”
- “等一等时,成人会陪在旁边。”
- “给出去、接过来,或者两个人一起用,都是不同的玩法。”
Choose only one or two prompts:
- “谁在说‘轮到我’?”
- “哪一张图在等一等?”
- “谁把球递出去?”
- “两个人正在一起用什么?”
If Amara points to herself, say “对,轮到伊伊。” If she turns away or holds her hands close, say “你现在还不想给,可以告诉我。”
Today's Original Mini Story
Two children see one bright ball. One child says, “My turn,” and plays for a short moment. The adult stays close: “Wait with me. Your turn is coming.” When the first child is ready, the ball is offered with open hands. The second child takes a turn, and both children decide what to do next.
The story shows one possible turn. It does not require Amara to surrender something she is still using.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes, focused on listening, pointing, and gestures.
Words and Gestures
| English | Meaning | Gentle gesture |
|---|---|---|
| my turn | 轮到我 | Point gently to self |
| your turn | 轮到你 | Open one hand towards the other person |
| wait | 等一等 | Stay close to the adult |
| give | 给 | Offer with open hands |
| take | 拿 | Receive with open hands |
| share | 一起用 | Point to the two children using one item |
Useful Chunks
My turn.Your turn.Wait with me.Here you go.You can take it.Let's use it together.Not yet? That's okay.
Play without an object:
- Point to yourself and say
My turn. - Open one hand towards Amara and say
Your turn. - Hold both hands open as if offering an imaginary ball:
Here you go. - Let Amara copy any one gesture or simply watch.
Do not require translation, eye contact, a complete sentence, or an actual exchange.
3. Early Math: One Ball, Two Hands, Three Arrows
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Use only the bottom counting row:
- Under 1, touch the one ball once and say
one ball. - Under 2, touch the two open hands one at a time and say
one, two. - Under 3, touch the three separate circular arrows one at a time and say
one, two, three.
The arrows stand for turns coming around again. They are three separate icons to count, not instructions to spin.
Do not test numeral recognition or ask Amara to count independently. A look or one correct touch is enough.
4. Movement and Social Play: A Tiny Turn
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Use gestures rather than a desired toy:
- Adult points to self:
My turn, then makes one slow clap. - Adult opens a hand:
Your turn; Amara may clap, move, or do nothing. - Adult says
Wait with meand pauses for only a comfortable moment. - Repeat once only if Amara remains relaxed and interested.
The adult can narrate rather than control: “I clapped. Now you may have a turn.”
5. Real-Life Observation
During a naturally occurring shared activity, name one moment:
- “你还在用,我不会拿走。”
- “等你准备好,再决定要不要给。”
My turn is finished.Would you like a turn?- “可以一起用,也可以先各自玩。”
Keep waiting brief and offer closeness, another safe activity, or adult help. Sharing is easier when a toddler feels secure and knows an adult will protect both the child and the object.
No Forced Sharing
Do not pull an object from Amara's hands, shame her for saying no, or require a long wait. If children grab, hit, or become distressed, the adult blocks unsafe behaviour, separates bodies or the object as needed, names what happened with few words, and helps both children regulate. A turn resumes only when it is safe.
Bedtime Recall
Keep it warm and optional:
- “今天什么时候轮到你?”
- “等一等的时候,谁陪着你?”
My turn or your turn?Give, take, or use it together?
If she does not answer, share one neutral observation and finish.
