Matching Detectives
Today we notice same and different, use find, point, and check, then count matching pairs: one pair of socks, two pairs of mittens, and three pairs of leaves.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 4 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking between two pictures, pointing, copying a pose, or saying one word is enough. One pair means two things that belong together; today we count the pair groups, not test multiplication or written numbers.

How to use it
Print in colour on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page” selected, or show it full-screen. Look at the top concepts, follow the middle actions, and then touch each outlined pair group in the bottom row once. No loose socks, mittens, leaves, or other prepared objects are needed.
Goals
- Chinese: understand 一样, 不同, 配对, 找, 指, and 看看.
- English: meet
same,different,match,find,point, andcheck. - Cognition: compare two pictures and find an identical match.
- Early math: understand that one pair contains two items and count 1, 2, and 3 pair groups.
- Movement and life: copy the same or a different pose and notice matching items during an ordinary routine.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- Enough safe space for two simple poses.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Describe the top row:
- “两个蓝色圆形看起来一样。”
- “绿色三角形和红色正方形不同。”
- “两张小猫图片一样，可以配成一对。”
Follow the middle row:
- “先找一找。”
- “找到后指一指。”
- “把两个放在一起看看，是不是一样。”
Ask only one or two questions: “哪两个一样？” “哪两个不同？” A point or a look back and forth is a complete response.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.

Use short chunks:
Same.Different.Find a match.Point and check.
Do not require translation or a sentence. Let Amara change her answer after checking.
3. Early Math: Count the Pairs
Time: 3–5 minutes.
First explain: “A pair is two things together. 一对里面有两个。”
- Card 1: touch the single oval once and say
one pair of socks. Inside it are exactly two socks. - Card 2: touch each oval once—
one pair, two pairs of mittens. The two pairs contain exactly four mittens. - Card 3: touch each oval once—
one, two, three pairs of leaves. The three pairs contain exactly six leaves.
When counting pairs, one touch belongs to one outlined pair group. Do not count each mitten or leaf as another pair, and do not require Amara to state four or six.
4. Movement: Same or Different?
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Move away from the screen:
- Adult raises both hands; Amara may make the
samepose. - Adult crouches; Amara may choose a
differentpose. - Say
Find, look at each other,Point, thenCheck. - Let Amara lead one pose and copy her.
The same pose can be approximate; matching does not require identical body control.
Safety and Respect
Use slow poses with both feet secure. Do not compare bodies or call a child's natural movement “wrong.” If pointing at people feels uncomfortable, point only to the illustrated shapes and objects.
5. Everyday Observation and Life Skills
During ordinary dressing, notice without preparing an extra activity:
- “These two socks go together. One pair.”
- “The colours are the same.”
- “This one is different; let's check again.”
Let Amara look or point. An adult remains responsible for choosing clothing that is safe and suitable.
Bedtime Recall
- “今天哪两个图形一样？”
- “一对里面有几个东西？”
Same or different?- “找到了以后，可以怎么检查？”
If she does not answer, show two fingers together and say, “一对是两个。”
