Listen to First Sounds
Listen to First Sounds
Today Chinese time names three familiar pictures, while English time gently notices the beginning sounds in ball, moon, and sun. This is listening play, not a letter or pronunciation lesson.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 5 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, listening, saying one word, making an approximate sound, pausing, or refusing all count. Do not test letters, ask “What sound?”, correct pronunciation, or require repetition.

How to use it
Use only this A4 picture. In Chinese, simply name 球、月亮、太阳. In English, the adult slowly models ball, moon, and sun, slightly clarifying the first sound without exaggerating the mouth. Finish with one ball, two moons, and three suns along the bottom.
Goals
- Chinese: understand 球, 月亮, 太阳, 听一听, 指一指, and 停一停.
- English: notice that
ball, moon, andsunbegin differently. - Early math: count one ball, two moons, and three suns.
- Listening and life skills: choose to listen, point, pause, or stop.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above.
- A quiet place at comfortable speaking volume.
No alphabet cards, mirror, mouth tool, recording, or loose object is needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
- “这是球。”
- “这是月亮。”
- “这是太阳。”
- “我们听一听,也可以只指一指。”
Chinese time remains an object-word conversation; do not teach B, M, or S as Chinese sounds.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
| Word | Adult model | Accepted response |
|---|---|---|
ball | a gentle, natural /b/ beginning | Look or point |
moon | a gentle, natural /m/ beginning | Look, hum, or point |
sun | a gentle, natural /s/ beginning | Look, approximate, or pause |
Say the whole word, not an isolated sound drill: ball, moon, sun. The printed B, M, and S are visual supports for the adult, not a recognition test for Amara.
3. Early Math: One Ball, Two Moons, Three Suns
Time: 3–5 minutes.
- Touch the one ball once.
- Touch the two moons one at a time.
- Touch the three suns one at a time.
Do not count moon craters, sun rays, ball colours, or the printed letters.
4. Listening Action: Listen, Point, Pause
Time: 3–5 minutes.
The adult says one whole word at normal volume. Amara may point to its picture, choose another picture, or pause. End after one or two words if she turns away.
Sound-Play Safety
Do not ask Amara to watch or copy mouth positions, touch her lips or face, prolong breath sounds, shout, or repeat until “correct.” A speech difference cannot be assessed through this activity. Stop if listening feels tiring.
5. Everyday Connection
If a pictured object naturally appears, name it once in English. Do not search for extra objects or turn the moment into “Which sound does it start with?”
Bedtime Recall
- “今天看了球、月亮还是太阳?”
Ball, moon, or sun?- “你想听一听,还是停一停?”
