Crossing with an Adult
Crossing with an Adult
Today we look at stopping, holding hands, and walking at a crosswalk with a familiar adult. A toddler never decides independently when traffic is safe.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 5 months old. Keep each guided picture activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, saying one word, pausing, or refusing the teaching conversation all count. In real traffic, however, the adult must maintain reliable physical protection; a preference to cross alone cannot be accepted as a safe choice.

How to use it
Use only this A4 picture. Notice STOP 停下来, HOLD HANDS 牵手, and LOOK WITH ADULT 和大人一起看, then discuss CROSSWALK 斑马线, WALK 走过去, and STAY CLOSE 靠近大人. Finish with one adult, two shoes—not two pairs—and three trees.
Goals
- Chinese: understand 停下来, 牵手, 和大人一起看, 斑马线, 走过去, and 靠近大人.
- English: meet
stop, hold hands, look with adult, crosswalk, walk, andstay close. - Early math: count one adult, two individual shoes, and three trees.
- Road safety: wait for an adult's decision and remain reliably protected.
- Life skills: walk rather than run while crossing.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above.
- A trusted caregiver beside Amara.
Do not practise at a real road, car park, driveway, crossing, or kerb for this lesson.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
- “到路边先和大人停下来。”
- “大人可靠地牵护你。”
- “大人观察车辆和信号,决定什么时候走。”
- “一起走斑马线,不跑,不松开。”
Looking in different directions is something Amara may notice with the adult; it is never permission to cross independently.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Stop with an adult.Hold hands.Look with the adult.Walk and stay close.
Accept a point or one word during picture time. Do not test left and right or traffic-light colours.
3. Early Math: One Adult, Two Shoes, Three Trees
Time: 3–5 minutes.
- Touch the one adult once.
- Touch the two individual shoes one at a time.
- Touch the three trees one at a time.
Do not call the two shoes “two pairs,” and do not count laces, branches, or numerals.
4. Safe Picture Action: Stop and Hold
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Away from traffic, point to STOP, place the child's and caregiver's hands near the matching picture if both are comfortable, and point to WALK. The physical demonstration is optional in picture time.
Road Safety
Real road crossing is not a toddler choice activity. A responsible adult selects the route and safe moment, maintains reliable hand-holding or another appropriate protective hold, keeps Amara close, and continues checking traffic. Do not treat a green signal, crosswalk, or “look both ways” as permission for her to cross alone. Never practise by stepping into a road.
5. Everyday Adult Responsibility
On real outings, the adult remains undistracted, stops well back from the kerb, chooses a crossing, and walks—not runs—with Amara. The page supplements supervision; it does not transfer traffic judgement to the child.
Bedtime Recall
- “过马路和谁在一起?”
Stop, hold hands, walk.- “谁决定什么时候安全?”
