Help, Please
Help, Please
Today we practise getting help from a trusted caregiver through looking, pointing, moving close, crying, gesturing, or saying help. Help must never depend on saying please.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 5 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. A look, point, reach, cry, one word, approximation, moving close, pause, or refusal is meaningful communication. Respond to the need first; never test politeness or delay help until she speaks.

How to use it
Use only this A4 picture. Notice ADULT 大人, POINT 指一指, and HELP 帮帮我, then model LOOK 看一看, COME CLOSE 靠近, and SAFE 安全. Finish with one adult, two helping hands, and three hearts.
Goals
- Chinese: understand 大人, 指一指, 帮帮我, 看一看, 靠近, and 安全.
- English: meet
adult, point, help, look, come close, andsafe. - Communication: recognise several valid ways to request help.
- Early math: count one adult, two hands, and three hearts.
- Life skills: seek a trusted caregiver without a politeness condition.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above.
- A calm place beside a trusted caregiver.
No role-play prop, help card, toy, or staged problem is needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
- “这是照顾你的熟悉大人。”
- “可以指一指哪里需要帮助。”
- “哭、靠近或说‘帮帮我’都可以。”
- “大人先来帮助,不等你说请。”
Here, “adult” means a trusted caregiver already known to Amara, not any stranger.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
| Word or phrase | Meaning | Possible response |
|---|---|---|
help | 帮帮我 | Point, reach, cry, or say one word |
look | 看一看 | Look toward the trusted caregiver |
come close | 靠近 | Move near without required touch |
safe | 安全 | Stay beside the caregiver |
The adult may model Help, please, but immediately add: You can point. I will help.
3. Early Math: One Adult, Two Hands, Three Hearts
Time: 3–5 minutes.
- Touch the one adult once.
- Touch the two hands one at a time.
- Touch the three hearts one at a time.
Do not count fingers, clothing details, heart highlights, or numerals.
4. Life Skill: Ask Without a Performance
Time: 3–5 minutes.
The adult points to one picture and says, “需要帮助时,可以看我、指一指、靠近我,或者哭出来。” Amara may respond or decline. Do not create a difficult situation for practice.
Help and Relationship Safety
A trusted caregiver is someone already responsible for Amara's care. Do not teach her to approach any adult, require touch or a hug, or withhold food, comfort, toileting, medical care, or other help until she says please. Meet the need first and model words afterwards.
5. Everyday Connection
When a real need occurs, name her communication: “你指给我看了,我来帮你。” Avoid asking her to repeat the request once the need is understood.
Bedtime Recall
- “需要帮助时可以找谁?”
Point, come close, or help?- “不说话也可以怎样告诉大人?”
