Sort by What It Does
Sort by What It Does
Today we group picture examples by familiar use: a bowl and spoon for eating, clothes for wearing, and a bed and blanket for resting.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 5 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, copying one pretend action, saying one word, or declining all count. The adult supplies the category language; this is not a sorting test.

How to use it
Print on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page,” or show it full-screen. Use only the poster. Point to one upper card, name its two pictures, and add the shared use. Do not bring out utensils, clothing pieces, bedding, or small sorting objects.
Goals
- Chinese: understand “吃饭、穿戴、休息、分一分、放一起、说一说.”
- English: meet
eat, wear, rest, sort, group, andtalk. - Thinking: hear that two different objects can support the same familiar activity.
- Early math: touch exactly one hat, two bowls, and three beds in the bottom row.
- Life skill: use picture categories as flexible conversation, not rigid rules.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above.
- No bowl, spoon, clothing, blanket, bed item, or loose sorting piece is required.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
- “碗和勺子可以在吃饭时使用。”
- “帽子和上衣可以穿戴。”
- “床和毯子让人想到休息。”
Offer one choice: “想看吃饭、穿戴还是休息?” Any choice or refusal is accepted.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
| English | 中文 | Picture response |
|---|---|---|
eat | 吃饭 | Point to bowl or spoon |
wear | 穿戴 | Point to hat or shirt |
rest | 休息 | Point to bed or blanket |
sort | 分一分 | Look at picture cards |
group | 放一起 | Point to either pair |
talk | 说一说 | Gesture or one word |
Model: Bowl and spoon: eat. or Bed and blanket: rest. Do not ask Amara to name the category.
3. Early Math: Hat, Bowls, Beds
Time: 3–5 minutes.
- Under 1, touch the one hat.
- Under 2, touch the two bowls separately.
- Under 3, touch the three beds separately.
Count only whole bottom-row pictures, not dots, bedding parts, or upper objects.
4. Pretend Actions: Eat, Wear, Rest
Time: 3–5 minutes while seated or standing beside an adult.
With empty hands, make one small pretend scoop, touch the top of the head for wear, then rest hands together for rest. Watching or declining is equally acceptable.
5. Life Skill: Talk About Use
Time: 3–5 minutes.
The adult can expand one point: “你指帽子。帽子可以戴。” / Hat—you can wear it. Do not demand that every object have only one possible use.
Poster-Only Sorting
Do not provide real utensils, bedding, clothing, or small loose objects for classification. Avoid right-or-wrong rounds, speed, correction, or repeated prompting. Adults handle any real-life safety decisions about objects.
Bedtime Recall
- “哪张图让你想到休息?”
Eat, wear, or rest?
One look or one word is enough.
