Week One Discovery
Week One Discovery
Today we revisit texture, weight, and distance in a relaxed way. We notice what Amara chooses to view and how she communicates, without checking memory or making up missed “tasks.”
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 5 months old. Keep each activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, gesturing, saying one word, changing the subject, or declining all count. A review rebuilds connections; it is not a weekly test.

How to use it
Print in colour on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page” selected, or display it full-screen. Let Amara choose TEXTURE 纹理, WEIGHT 轻重, or DISTANCE 远近. Talking about only that card is enough.
Goals
- Chinese: hear 纹理, 轻重, 远近, 看一看, 选一选, and 说一说 again.
- English: revisit
texture, weight, distance, look, choose, andtell. - Cognition: recognise one familiar clue among three concepts and connect it to a gesture or picture.
- Early maths: count one leaf, two feathers, and three balls.
- Early metacognition: experience “I can choose what to look at and share what I notice.”
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- There is no need to repeat object activities or prepare review cards.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Offer the choice first: “你想看纹理、轻重,还是远近?” Then make only one or two connections:
- “纹理是表面看起来、摸起来怎样。”
- “轻重需要把两个东西放在一起比较。”
- “远近要说清楚离谁近、离谁远。”
You may ask, “你发现了什么?” If she points, translate her point into a sentence; she need not explain the concept herself.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
| Word | Meaning | Possible response |
|---|---|---|
texture | 纹理 | Point to the first concept card |
weight | 轻重 | Raise and lower the palms |
distance | 远近 | Bring two hands together or apart |
look | 看一看 | Look at the chosen card |
choose | 选一选 | Point to one card |
tell | 说一说/告诉 | Use gaze, movement, sound, or one word |
Use Look and choose., Texture, weight, or distance?, and Tell me. An English explanation is not required.
3. Early Maths: Familiar 1, 2, 3
Time: 3–5 minutes.
- 1 leaf:
one leaf. - 2 feathers: touch each and say
two feathers. - 3 balls: touch each and say
three balls.
Let Amara choose a group first. One group is enough. Counting is shared attention, not proof that she “can count to three.”
4. Movement Choice: I Choose One
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Offer three gestures:
- Draw tiny bumps for
texture. - Raise and lower the hands for
weight. - Bring two hands closer and apart for
distance.
After Amara chooses, copy the gesture with her once. If she invents her own movement, follow it instead of correcting it to a standard.
Safety
Review does not require touching rough surfaces, carrying heavy objects, or moving far away. Use only pictures and small gestures. Pause when she looks tired, becomes upset, or turns her body away.
5. Everyday Observation and Life Skills
Record one word or action that occurred naturally this week—for example, saying “heavy,” bringing the hands close for “near,” or declining to touch a surface. A pattern of interest matters more than a score.
Bedtime Recall
- “今天你选了哪一张?”
- “哪个动作最好玩?”
What did you choose?
The adult can model: “I liked the distance gesture.” Amara does not need to recall the whole week.
