Texture Detectives
Today pictures of stone, bark, and cloth introduce smooth, rough, and soft. The focus is comparing visible clues and expressing a choice, not pretending that a picture reveals an object’s actual feel.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 5 months old. Keep each activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, gesturing, saying one word, or declining to continue are all valid responses. A two-dimensional picture can introduce texture language, but it cannot replace touch and has no required right answer.

How to use it
Print in colour on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page” selected, or show it full-screen. View only one or two cards at a time. Describe visible lines and shapes first, then say “It might feel…” so the pictured texture is not treated as certain fact.
Goals
- Chinese: meet 石头, 树皮, 布, 光滑, 粗糙, 柔软, 比较, and 选择.
- English: meet
stone,bark,cloth,smooth,rough,soft,look,compare, andchoose. - Cognition: notice flat, bumpy, and folded visual clues and compare two pictures.
- Early maths: use one-to-one pointing for one stone, two pinecones, and three scarves.
- Communication: choose between two pictures through gaze, pointing, or one word.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- Do not collect stones, bark, cloth, or pinecones for this activity.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Use careful language with the top three pictures:
- “石头画得很平，看起来可能光滑。”
- “树皮有凹凸线，看起来可能粗糙。”
- “布有软软的褶皱，看起来可能柔软。”
Offer a choice:
- “你想看石头还是布？”
- “哪一张的线条最多？”
- “你想选光滑，还是柔软？”
Her choice does not have to match an adult expectation; real objects can feel different.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.

Use Look., Smooth stone., Rough bark., Soft cloth., and Choose one. Model once; repetition is optional.
3. Early Maths: One Point for One Item
Time: 3–5 minutes.
- 1 stone: touch once and say
one stone. - 2 pinecones: touch each from left to right and say
two pinecones. - 3 scarves: touch each scarf once and say
three scarves.
If she touches the same object twice, do not mark it wrong. Simply model “one touch for one” more slowly.
4. Movement Game: Compare with Gestures
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Say one word and use a no-object gesture:
Smooth— send a flat palm slowly forwards.Rough— draw a tiny bumpy line with one finger.Soft— gently cup the hands as if holding a cloud.
Amara may copy or point back to the matching picture. Stop after two rounds so it does not become a performance task.
Safety
This activity does not require touching unfamiliar stones, sharp bark, or small pinecones. Do not ask Amara to collect, mouth, or explore pictured objects alone. A real object may also feel different from its illustration.
5. Everyday Observation and Life Skills
If a safe, familiar surface is encountered in the normal routine, describe it once: “这条毛巾摸起来柔软。” Ask before inviting touch and stop if she says no. There is no need to prepare an extra sensory activity today.

- “石头、树皮、布，你记得哪一张？”
- “你今天选了哪一个？”
