Same & Different
Same & Different
Today we notice matching socks and cups that differ only in colour, using description rather than right-or-wrong questions.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 5 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, choosing, copying one pose, saying one word, or declining all count. Describe one obvious feature at a time; this is not a matching test.

How to use it
Print on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page,” or display it full-screen. Use only the poster. Describe the two identical socks, then the blue and red cups. Invite one look or choice without asking Amara to find a correct answer.
Goals
- Chinese: understand “相同、不同、袜子、杯子、看、选择.”
- English: meet
same, different, socks, cups, look, andchoose. - Thinking: notice one clear feature—same pattern or different colour.
- Early math: touch exactly one hat, two matching socks, and three differently coloured balls.
- Movement: optionally copy one same pose and one different pose beside an adult.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above.
- No real socks, cups, balls, hats, or sorting pieces are required.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
- “两只袜子的颜色和条纹一样。”
- “两个杯子形状一样,颜色不同:一个蓝,一个红。”
- “你可以看一看,也可以选一张。”
Ask at most one prompt: “你想看袜子还是杯子?” Either choice, changing choice, or no choice is accepted.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
| English | 中文 | Possible response |
|---|---|---|
same socks | 相同袜子 | Point to either sock |
different cups | 不同杯子 | Point to either cup |
look | 看一看 | Look briefly |
match | 配一配 | Point to both socks |
notice | 注意 | Point to one feature |
choose | 选择 | Choose or decline |
Model: Same socks. Different colours. You can choose. Do not correct a spontaneous answer.
3. Early Math: Hat, Socks, Balls
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Use only the bottom row:
- Under 1, touch the one hat.
- Under 2, touch the two matching socks separately.
- Under 3, touch the three balls separately.
Say the three ball colours only after counting whole balls. Do not count stripes or clothing details.
4. Movement: Same Pose, Different Pose
Time: 3–5 minutes in a clear indoor space.
Beside an adult, both may place hands by the body for one “same” pose. Then the adult raises one hand while Amara may keep hers down for “different.” Watching, making any pose, or declining all count.
5. Life Skill: Describe One Difference
Time: 3–5 minutes.
The adult models one neutral description: “杯子颜色不同。” / The colours are different. Avoid “Which is right?” or “Find the mistake.” Difference is information, not an error.
No Matching Test
Use the poster only and discuss one obvious feature at a time. Do not demand a match, hide an object, score a choice, repeat the question, or correct pointing. Keep small real objects out of the activity.
Bedtime Recall
- “两只袜子哪里一样?”
Same socks or different cups?
If Amara points elsewhere, follow her interest instead of redirecting to a correct answer.
