Which One Is Different
Today we look at three clear picture groups: two apples and a banana, two cats and a dog, and two circles and a square.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 5 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing anywhere, choosing any picture, saying one word, or declining all count. The adult describes what is visible; this is not an odd-one-out test.

How to use it
Print on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page,” or show it full-screen. Use only the poster. Choose one upper card and neutrally name all three pictures. Amara may look, choose either matching picture, choose the different picture, change her choice, or not choose.
Goals
- Chinese: understand “看一看、注意、选择、一样、不一样.”
- English: meet
look,notice,choose,same, anddifferent. - Thinking: hear a neutral description of one clear difference in each upper group.
- Early math: touch exactly one banana, two dogs, and three squares in the bottom row.
- Life skill: make or decline a simple choice without evaluation.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above.
- No fruit, animal toys, shape pieces, or other real objects are needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Describe only one group:
- “这里有两个红苹果和一根黄香蕉。”
- “这里有两只橙色小猫和一只棕色小狗。”
- “这里有两个蓝圆形和一个橙色方形。”
Offer: “你想指哪一个？” Any point—or no point—is accepted.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.

Model one sentence: Two apples and one banana. Do not ask, “Which is correct?”
3. Early Math: Banana, Dogs, Squares
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Count only the bottom row:
- Under 1, touch the one banana.
- Under 2, touch the two dogs separately.
- Under 3, touch the three squares separately.
Do not count upper icons, animal features, or card borders.
4. Calm Action: Look, Point, Rest
Time: 3–5 minutes while seated beside an adult.
Model three optional actions: look at one card, point once, then put hands at rest. Amara may do one, all, or none. Do not guide her hand to a target.
5. Life Skill: A Choice Can Change
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Say: “你可以选这个，也可以改选。” / You can choose or change. Respond equally warmly to every choice and to refusal.
No Odd-One-Out Pressure
The upper groups are visually clear examples, but the child is not required to identify the different item. Do not repeat the question, correct pointing, praise only one answer, score choices, or introduce small real pieces.
