Two Words Together
Today a familiar adult models three useful two-word combinations: red ball, small cat, and adult reads. Amara may listen, look, point, pause, or say one word; repeating both words is never required.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 5 months old. Keep each guided activity to 3–8 minutes. A look, point, gesture, one word, approximation, pause, or refusal is a meaningful response. Model naturally without testing reading, asking for memorisation, or withholding the next activity until she speaks.

How to use it
Use only this A4 picture, printed or displayed full-screen. Point once to RED BALL 红球, SMALL CAT 小猫, and ADULT READS 大人读, then model LOOK 看一看, LISTEN 听一听, or PAUSE 停一停. Finish with only the bottom row: one ball, two cats, and three books.
Goals
- Chinese: understand 红球, 小猫, 大人读, 看一看, 听一听, and 停一停.
- English: hear two familiar words joined into a short meaningful chunk.
- Early math: count one ball, two cats, and three books with one-to-one touching.
- Movement and life skills: choose looking, listening, or pausing and communicate “finished” through body language.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- A calm place to sit with the screen or paper handled by an adult.
No ball, toy cat, book, word card, or other teaching object is needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
- “这是红球。”
- “这是小猫。”
- “大人在读书。”
- “你可以看一看、听一听，也可以停一停。”
Describe one card at a time. If Amara points, expand once: “对，小猫。” Do not ask her to copy a two-word phrase.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.

Say each chunk once or twice with a natural rhythm. One word such as ball, a sound, a point, or silence is enough.
3. Early Math: One Ball, Two Cats, Three Books
Time: 3–5 minutes.
- Touch the one ball once.
- Touch the two cats one at a time.
- Touch the three books one at a time.
Count each complete picture once. Do not count cat ears, book pages, colour sections, or printed numerals.
4. Safe Action: Look, Listen, Pause
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Choose one:
- Look toward a preferred card.
- Turn one ear toward the adult's quiet voice.
- Rest both hands and pause.
Language and Body Safety
Keep the voice at ordinary speaking volume and leave comfortable personal space. Do not move Amara's face, demand eye contact, prompt the same words repeatedly, or treat a refusal as failure. The adult models; the child is not required to perform.
5. Everyday Connection
During an ordinary moment, model one true two-word chunk such as blue cup, big tree, or adult sits. Say it once without asking “What is this?”
Bedtime Recall
- “今天看到了红球还是小猫？”
Red ball or small cat?- “你喜欢看、听，还是停一下？”
Model an answer if Amara does not respond.
