Light and Heavy
Today pictures of a feather, book, and watermelon introduce light and heavy. We compare, count, and practise asking an adult before handling something that looks heavy.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 5 months old. Keep each activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, moving, saying one word, or saying no all count. Pictures introduce an early concept; she is not expected to judge weight accurately by sight or take part in a lifting test.

How to use it
Print in colour on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page” selected, or display it full-screen. Begin with one interesting card, then compare two pictures using “looks lighter/heavier.” Remind her that actual weight is known only through safe handling.
Goals

Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- Do not prepare weights or ask Amara to move a watermelon, stack of books, or furniture.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Use relative comparisons:
- “羽毛和书比，羽毛通常更轻。”
- “书和羽毛比，书通常更重。”
- “西瓜看起来很重，要先问大人。”
Invite an easy response:
- “你想看羽毛还是书？”
- “哪一张看起来轻轻的？”
- “很重的时候可以找谁？”
If she chooses differently, acknowledge her choice before calmly modelling your own idea.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.

3. Early Maths: Matching One Point to One Item
Time: 3–5 minutes.
- Touch 1 feather:
one feather. - Touch each of 2 books:
two books. - Touch each of 3 blocks:
three blocks.
Quantity is the only focus here; do not ask which whole group is heavier. Touch each item once, or let Amara simply watch the model.
4. Movement Game: Light, Heavy, Stop
Time: 3–5 minutes, with no objects:
- Say
lightand float both hands slowly upwards. - Say
heavyand lower both hands slowly, then pause. - Say
ask an adult, bring the hands back, and look towards the adult. - Let Amara point to the picture that chooses the next round.
Do not hold breath, strain, squat sharply, or imitate carrying a real load.
Safety
Do not let a toddler decide whether to move watermelons, large books, boxes, or furniture. If something blocks the way, might fall, or has uncertain weight, stop, step back, and find an adult. “See whether you can lift it” is not part of this activity.
5. Everyday Observation and Life Skills
When carrying naturally arises, model: “这个我来拿，你可以问大人。” Amara may choose “I carry the light one” or “help, please,” but the adult decides whether an item is safe.
Bedtime Recall
- “羽毛和西瓜，你记得哪一个？”
- “看到很重的东西先做什么？”
