Together and Apart
Today we notice how ducks, shoes, and blocks can be together or apart. We explore grouping, movement, and pausing while respecting a child’s choice not to come close or touch.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 5 months old. Keep each activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, moving a finger, saying one word, pausing, or declining are all valid. Together never means a required hug or touch, and apart is not a punishment.

How to use it
Print in colour on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page” selected, or display it full-screen. Describe the objects’ spatial arrangement, then invite a choice between closer together or farther apart. Do not use the words to judge whether a child is sociable.
Goals
- Chinese: meet 鸭子, 鞋子, 积木, 一起, 分开, and 停一停.
- English: meet

Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- No toys, shoes, socks, or body contact are needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Use neutral descriptions:
- “鸭子游到一起。”
- “两只鞋分开摆着。”
- “积木可以靠在一起，也可以移开。”
Invite an easy response:
- “哪一张靠在一起？”
- “哪一张中间有空隙？”
- “你想让手指一起，还是分开？”
If she only looks, describe the picture under her gaze without asking why.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.

Say Join., Move apart., and Pause. Give one cue at a time and allow her own pace.
3. Early Maths: One Basket, Two Socks, Three Blocks
Time: 3–5 minutes.
- 1 basket:
one basket. - 2 socks: touch each and say
two socks. - 3 blocks: touch each and say
three blocks.
Although socks often make a pair, touch and count each individual sock. Number words and classifiers do not need to be produced.
4. Finger Game: Join, Move Apart, Pause
Time: 3–5 minutes.
- Hold two fingers with a little space between them.
- Say
joinand move them closer; touching is optional. - Say
move apartand separate them slowly. - Say
pauseand become still. - Let Amara decide whether to do another round.
Her hand never needs to touch yours. End immediately when she indicates stop.
Body Boundaries
Do not use hugging, hand-pulling, face-to-face contact, or pushing two children together to demonstrate join. Invite before any touch and accept refusal. Moving apart and pausing are ordinary, safe choices.
5. Everyday Observation and Life Skills
When tidying or queuing happens naturally, say, “The shoes are together now” or “We leave a little space.” Describe the arrangement without treating together as good or apart as bad.

- “鸭子、鞋子、积木，你记得哪一张？”
- “你想一起，还是分开一点？”

Accept her current choice. Pause is already a complete answer.
