Compare Length from the Same Start
Compare Length from the Same Start
Today we align the starting point before noticing longer and shorter. There is no ruler and no race.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 7 months old. Keep each part to 3–8 minutes and use only the poster and audio. Looking, pointing, tracing a line, saying one word, staying quiet, pausing, or declining all count. Compare only the two items within one row because they share a start.
A4 Teaching Picture

Goals
- Chinese: meet “同一起点、较长、较短.”
- English: hear
same start, longer, andshorter. - Early math: notice that a length comparison begins with aligned starts.
- Movement: optionally trace from the orange starting line.
Materials
- The A4 poster and today's English audio.
- No ruler, string, track, or other object is needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Point first to the orange line in each row: “它们从同一点开始。” Trace to one endpoint and say “这一条较长,” then trace to the other and say “这一条较短.” View each row separately. Do not compare across rows or use the number of decorations as length.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Transcript:
English time. Listen, look, or point. Start at the same line. This ribbon is longer. This ribbon is shorter. We compare only when both start at the same place. We do not need a ruler. You may look or stop.
Listening, looking, or stopping are equally valid.
3. Math 1 / 2 / 3
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Count only the bottom 1 ribbon, 2 path strips, and 3 separate leaves. The counting strip is not for length comparison; return to each upper same-start row for that concept.
4. Movement & Life
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Tap an orange starting line and trace one pictured item to its endpoint. Amara may follow one, watch, or stop. Do not compare children's heights, limbs, or walking speed, and do not say anyone “wins.”
Comparison Conditions
If starts are not aligned, pause the comparison. Today uses no ruler, tick mark, unit, race, or ranking. Do not move a picture to create a trick or ask which choice is “right.”
Bedtime
Time: 3 minutes. Say quietly, “Start at the same place, then notice longer and shorter.” End without a question.
