One More, One Fewer
Today we look only at small visible groups of 1–3 and use everyday “one more, one fewer” language without formal addition or subtraction.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 7 months old. Keep each part to 3–8 minutes and use only the poster and audio. Looking, pointing, showing fingers, saying one word, staying quiet, pausing, or declining all count. There are no equations, mental sums, answers, or speed demands.
A4 Teaching Picture
Goals
- Chinese: meet “多一个、少一个、小数量.”
- English: hear
one moreandone fewer. - Early math: observe only visible quantity changes among 1, 2, and 3.
- Movement: optionally watch the adult show 1–3 fingers.
Materials
- The A4 poster and today's English audio.
- No beads, blocks, number cards, paper, pen, or manipulatives are needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Describe only what is visible: “这里有 1 颗星。旁边一组有 2 颗，比前一组多一个。这里有 3 个圆。旁边一组有 2 个，比前一组少一个。” Do not write +, -, or =, and do not ask for a result.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Transcript:
English time. Listen, look, or point. One more. One fewer. This picture has one. The next picture has one more, so it has two. This picture has three. The next picture has one fewer, so it has two. We are only looking at small groups. You may stop.
Treat the words as picture description; there is no request to repeat or calculate.
3. Math 1 / 2 / 3
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Count only the bottom 1 star, 2 circles, and 3 leaves. Every group remains fully visible. Do not add, remove, or cover an item, and do not ask what a group “becomes.”
4. Movement & Life
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Show 1, 2, and 3 fingers in order, say “small groups,” and then rest your hand. Amara may watch, copy any amount, or decline. Do not use “more” and “fewer” to compare how much children eat, do, or achieve.

Bedtime
Time: 3 minutes. Say quietly, “One more, one fewer—we are only looking at small groups.” End without a question.
