First, Middle, Last
First, Middle, Last
Today a calm book story gives meaning to sequence words. It is narration, not competition.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 7 months old. Keep each part to 3–8 minutes and use only the poster and audio. Looking, pointing, making one movement, saying one word, staying quiet, pausing, or declining all count. There is no timing, ranking, or retelling demand.
A4 Teaching Picture

Goals
- Chinese: meet “第一、中间、最后、故事顺序.”
- English: hear
first, middle, andlast. - Cognition: follow the complete three-picture narrative.
- Early math: count only the bottom 1/2/3 strip.
Materials
- The A4 poster and today's English audio.
- No real book, sequencing card, timer, or prize is needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Read from top to bottom: “第一,孩子打开图画书。中间,孩子看一页。最后,孩子合上书,大人在旁边。” Tell the full story once and pause. Do not shuffle the cards or ask Amara to reorder them.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Transcript:
English time. Listen, look, or point. First. Middle. Last. First, the child opens the picture book. In the middle, the child looks at a page. Last, the child closes the book with an adult nearby. This is a story order, not a race. You may stop.
Play it once; full-sentence repetition is not requested.
3. Math 1 / 2 / 3
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Count only the bottom 1 book, 2 story cards, and 3 circles. Numerals show quantity, not rank. Here, first means a position in the story, not first place.
4. Movement & Life
Time: 3–5 minutes.
While seated, make three gentle gestures: first open both hands, in the middle rest the palms, and last return the hands to your own space. Amara may join one movement, watch, or stop. Daily sequences may be narrated without hurrying toward the end.
Sequence Is Not a Race
Use no timer, head start, “who is first,” or speed comparison. Keep all three story pictures visible; never remove the middle or ending for a guessing task.
Bedtime
Time: 3 minutes. Tell the three-line story quietly and finish with, “The story is complete.” End without a question.
