A Story in Three Pictures
A Story in Three Pictures
Today we follow three pictures from left to right: a bird lands, drinks, and flies away; a cat sees a box, enters it, and rests. The adult may model one story, while another description that fits the pictures may also work.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 7 months old. Keep each activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, moving, saying one word, staying quiet, pausing, or declining all count. Use only the two posters and audio; use no water dish, box, animals, or other objects, and set no single correct narration.

Goals
- Chinese: hear 先, 接着, and 最后 across a three-picture sequence.
- English: understand
first, next, andlastin a complete little story. - Early maths: count one bird, two cups, and three leaves.
- Narrative: connect three pictures while allowing more than one picture-consistent telling.
Materials
- Only the two A4 teaching pictures above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- The English audio below.
- No bird, water dish, box, cat, or other objects are needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Use the first poster: “先,小鸟落在浅水盆旁;接着,小鸟喝水;最后,小鸟飞走。” Use the second: “先,小猫看见纸箱;接着,小猫进入敞开的纸箱;最后,小猫在里面休息。”
If Amara says only “鸟,” “喝,” or “猫睡觉,” receive the meaning. If she says the bird first looks at the water or the cat is playing, accept it when it fits the picture instead of correcting to one script.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.

Transcript: English time. Listen, look, or point. First, the bird lands. Next, the bird drinks. Last, the bird flies away. Three pictures can make one little story. Your story may be different. All done.
Play it once and move a finger across the three panels. Repeating the sequence words is optional.
| English | Chinese | Possible response |
|---|---|---|
First, the bird lands. | 先,小鸟落下。 | Point to panel one or say 鸟 |
Next, the bird drinks. | 接着,小鸟喝水。 | Point, make a small movement, or stay quiet |
Last, the bird flies away. | 最后,小鸟飞走。 | Point, wave, or pause |
3. Early Maths: 1, 2, 3
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Count only the separate bottom strip of the first poster: one complete bird, two complete cups, and three complete leaves. Ignore wings, cup handles, and veins.
4. Movement, Everyday Life, and Boundaries
Time: 3–5 minutes.
The adult may show one, two, and three fingers in turn, then glide an open hand from left to right. Amara may point to any panel, join, or finish. Do not cover the last panel to demand a guess or score the accuracy of a retelling.
Safety and Development
Use pictures only. Do not approach wildlife, touch a water dish, or invite Amara into a real cardboard box. A real box may tip, close, or trap a child; the story picture never replaces supervision and an environmental safety check.
Bedtime Recall
- “Which panel would you like to see again?”
- “Three pictures may have different tellings.”
- Say
Your story may be different.once, then accept any response or quiet.
