Light and Shadow
Light and Shadow
Today we use pictures to meet light and shadow and notice that they often appear together.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 6 months old. Keep each activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, making one small gesture, saying one word, pausing, or declining all count. There is no quiz and no repetition requirement.

How to use it
Print on portrait A4 paper with “Fit to page,” or show it full-screen. Use only this poster and the audio. No torch, mirror, toy, or other object is needed.
Goals
- Chinese: meet “光、影子、亮、暗、窗户.”
- English: meet
light, shadow, andlook. - Science: notice that a shadow may appear when an object blocks some light; its appearance depends on the light source, object, and position.
- Early math: count exactly one sun, two shadows, and three windows in the bottom strip.
- Safety: never look directly at the sun or shine any bright light towards eyes.
Materials
- The A4 poster above.
- The English audio below.
- No physical object is required.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Say slowly: “窗户边有光。地上有影子。影子是物体挡住一部分光时出现的暗形状。”
Invite once: “你想看光,还是影子?” Looking anywhere, making no choice, or leaving is acceptable.
2. English Time
Download the 22 October English audio
Transcript:
English time. Listen, look, or point. Light. Shadow. Window light can make a shadow. Look at the light patch. Look at the shadow. One sun. Two shadows. Three windows. You may listen, point, or stop.
| English | 中文 | Possible response |
|---|---|---|
light | 光 | Look at the light picture |
shadow | 影子 | Point to any shadow |
look | 看一看 | Look, point, or decline |
Play it once; replay only if Amara wants it. She does not need to repeat.
3. Early Math: 1, 2, 3
- Touch the one sun under 1.
- Touch the two complete shadows under 2.
- Touch the three complete windows under 3.
Count only the bottom subjects, not window panes, rays, people, or upper scenes.
4. Small Action
Stay seated with empty hands. Place one hand beside the other and say, “Hand and shadow.” Amara may copy once, watch, or stop.
5. Science and Safety Boundary
The poster shows possible examples, not a rule that every shadow looks the same. Direction, length, and sharpness can change with the light, object, and position.
Protect Eyes
Do not seek or look directly at the sun. Never point a torch, laser, phone flash, or another bright light towards eyes. There is no need to make a real shadow.
Bedtime Recall
- “你想再看光,还是影子?”
