What Plants Need
What Plants Need
Today we use two posters to meet broad plant needs while remembering that real plants differ.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 6 months old. Keep each activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, saying one word, making an empty-hand gesture, pausing, or declining all count. An adult owns all real plant care.
A4 Teaching Pictures

How to use them
Print each on portrait A4 paper. Begin with the broad concepts on poster one. If Amara remains interested, use poster two for “check—adult chooses—adult helps.” Use only the posters and audio.
Goals
- Chinese: meet “水、光、空气、照料、需要不同.”
- English: meet
water, light, air, anddifferent needs. - Science: water, light, and air are broad conditions for many plants, but species, place, growth stage, and weather alter real needs.
- Early math: count one leaf, two buds, and three seedlings.
- Life skill: know that an adult checks reliable care guidance.
Materials
- The two posters and audio only.
- No plant, water, soil, or watering can.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Say: “许多植物需要合适的水、光和空气。植物不同,需要可能不同。大人先检查,再选择怎样照料。”
Avoid “water every day” or “more sun is better.” Do not ask Amara to decide real care from the pictures.
2. English Time

Transcript:
English time. Listen, look, or point. Plants generally need water, light, and air. Different plants and places have different needs. An adult checks the care guidance. One leaf. Two buds. Three seedlings. You may listen, point, or stop.
| English | 中文 | Possible response |
|---|---|---|
water | 水 | Point to water symbol |
light | 光 | Point to light |
air | 空气 | Point to airflow |
different needs | 需要不同 | Look at any varied plant |
No repetition or pronunciation check is needed.
3. Early Math: Leaf, Buds, Seedlings
- Under 1, touch the one complete leaf.
- Under 2, touch the two complete buds.
- Under 3, touch the three complete seedling pots.
Count only the bottom of poster one, not upper leaves, pot rims, or poster two.
4. Life-Skill Picture Sequence
Point to the three extension scenes and say: “看一看。大人选择。大人照料。” Amara may point to one scene or rest; she does not imitate watering.
5. Science and Safety Boundary
Water, light, and air are not one universal recipe. Moisture, light intensity and duration, temperature, soil, airflow, species, and growth stage can matter.
No Watering Experiment
Do not let Amara pour water, handle soil, taste a plant, or put plant parts in her mouth. An adult follows the specific plant, environment, and reliable care guidance.
Bedtime Recall
- “你想再看水、光、空气,还是不同的植物?”
Water, light, air, or different needs?
