Joining Two Actions with “And”
Joining Two Actions with “And”
Today we hear how “和 / and” connects two actions by one person. The joining word enriches a sentence; the pictures help show whether the actions appear together or one after another.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 8 months old. Keep each activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, saying one word, staying quiet, pausing, or declining all count. Use only the poster and audio; do not ask for repetition, performance, eye contact, or touch.

Goals
- Chinese: understand “微笑和挥手” and “打开书和看图画.”
- English: notice the two actions on either side of
and. - Early maths: count one drum, two umbrellas, and three fish with one-to-one pointing.
- Language understanding: know that
andjoins information while pictures and context show the action relationship.
Materials
- Only the A4 teaching picture above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- The English audio below.
- No drum, umbrella, book, action cards, or other objects are needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Say, “米娅微笑和挥手。”“诺亚打开书和看图画。” A fingertip may move slowly from the first action to “和” and then to the second action in one natural demonstration.
Amara may look at only one action, point to the joining mark, say “笑” or “书,” stay quiet, pause, or decline. Do not ask her to perform both actions or fill in the joining word.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.

Transcript: English time. Listen, look, or point. Mia smiles and waves. Noah opens a book and looks at the pictures. And joins two actions in one sentence. The pictures show whether the actions happen together or in sequence. One drum. Two umbrellas. Three fish. All done.
Play it once. The adult may pause a fingertip at and so the joining place becomes visible. Repeating is not required.
| English | Chinese | Possible response |
|---|---|---|
smiles and waves | 微笑和挥手 | Look at either action, point, or say one word |
opens a book and looks | 打开书和看图画 | Look, point, or listen quietly |
And joins two actions. | And 连接两个动作。 | Look at the joining place, pause, or decline |
3. Early Maths: 1, 2, 3
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Count only the separate bottom strip: one drum, two umbrellas, and three fish. Point to each complete object once; do not count drum lines, umbrella ribs, or fins.
4. Connected Actions and Boundaries
Time: 3–5 minutes.
The adult can describe the poster's two small pictures as one sentence and say, “Both actions are true, so I join them with 和.” It is completely fine if Amara watches only the first or second picture; she need not sustain attention to the end.
Language Note
“和 / and” connects information but does not by itself guarantee a strict time order. The pictures help today: smiling and waving can occur together; opening a book and then looking at pictures shows a natural sequence.
Bedtime Recall
- “In the poster, Mia smiles and waves.”
- “In the poster, Noah opens a book and looks at the pictures.”
- Say
And joins two actions.once, then accept any response or quiet.
