Small Groups Can Come Together
Today we view complete picture stories in which small groups meet: 1 and 1 become 2 together, and 1 and 2 become 3 together. There are no plus signs, equals signs, or mental sums.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 8 months old. Keep each part to 3–8 minutes and use only the poster and audio. Looking, pointing, saying one word, staying quiet, pausing, or declining all count. The adult describes complete pictures without testing, correction, scoring, rewards, forced retelling, performance, or touch.

Goals
- Chinese: meet “这一小组、那一小组、合在一起.”

- Development: pictures remain complete; the adult narrates without calculation or answers.
Materials
The A4 poster and today's English audio. No counters, finger sums, addition cards, symbol cards, or movable toys are needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Narrate the first complete row in Chinese: “这边 1 只鸟，那边 1 只鸟；图里它们来到一起，一起有 2 只鸟。” Then the second: “这边 1 条鱼，那边 2 条鱼；图里来到一起，一起有 3 条鱼。” Every starting group and together group remains visible.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Transcript:
English time. Listen, look, or point. Small groups can come together. One bird and one bird are two birds together. One fish and two fish are three fish together. The pictures show the whole story. There is no plus sign and no answer to give. One red bird. Two blue fish. Three green stars. You may look, point, stay quiet, or stop.
Listening, pausing, or declining all count. Repetition, retelling, and answers are not requested.
3. Math 1 / 2 / 3
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Count only the bottom strip: 1 red bird, 2 blue fish, and 3 green stars. Do not combine the story pictures above with the bottom count.
4. Gentle Connection
Time: 3–5 minutes.
The adult may use two hands above the poster to represent two groups and bring the hands near the middle without touching Amara. She may watch, follow one hand, say “together,” stay quiet, or stop.
Development and Boundaries
This is an informal combining experience, not early equation teaching. Do not ask what it equals, hide the result, require finger counting, recitation, story retelling, or copied movement.
Bedtime
Time: 3 minutes. Say softly, “The small groups come together. The whole picture stays here.” Then finish.
