Water, Ice, and Melting
Water, Ice, and Melting
Today two A4 posters show water freezing and ice melting into water. Amara does not touch or taste ice and does not perform a temperature or melting experiment.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 8 months old. Keep each activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, one word, quiet, pausing, or declining are valid. Do not quiz, correct, score, rank, reward, force repetition or performance, or require eye contact or touch.

Goals
- Chinese: meet “水、冰、冻结、融化.”
- English: meet
water, ice, freeze, melt, andlook only. - Science: understand that water can become solid ice and melting ice can become liquid water.
- Safety: look at pictures only; an adult handles ice, temperature, and potentially slippery water.
Materials
- Only the two A4 posters above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- The English audio below.
- No water, ice, freezer, heat source, thermometer, or container, and no object-based temperature or change experiment.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 3–8 minutes.
Point along the main poster's arrows and say, “水在合适条件下会冻结成冰。”“冰在温度升高时会融化成水。” Then point to the extension poster: “今天只用眼睛看图片,大人处理冰和温度。”
Do not require the words “solid” or “liquid.” Watching a drop, an ice cube, or an arrow is full participation.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.

Transcript:
English time. Listen, look, or point. Water can freeze into ice. Ice can melt into water. Melting means a solid becomes liquid. We are only looking at pictures today. A grown-up handles ice and checks temperature. We do not touch, taste, or test. One snowflake. Two ice cubes. Three water drops.
| English | 中文 | Possible response |
|---|---|---|
water | 水 | Look at or point to a drop |
ice | 冰 | Look at an ice cube or stay quiet |
freeze | 冻结 | Watch the water-to-ice arrow |
melt | 融化 | Watch the ice-to-water arrow |
look only | 只看 | Look, turn away, or stop |
Stop immediately if Amara does not want the audio. Listening to the end is never a task.
3. Early Math: 1, 2, 3
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Count only the main poster's separate bottom strip: 1 snowflake, 2 ice cubes, and 3 water drops. Do not count shapes in the process diagram above.
4. Follow the Direction of Change
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Move one finger slowly along each arrow and say one short phrase: “水到冰。”“冰到水。” Amara may follow, point to one end, or stay with a preferred scene.
Do not require sequential retelling or correct a point with “wrong.”
5. Science and Safety Boundary
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Freezing and melting depend on temperature and conditions. The poster is a simplified diagram and does not mean every drop changes immediately. Real ice can be very cold and hard-edged; meltwater may make a surface slippery.
Pictures Only, No Body-Based Temperature Test
Do not give Amara ice, water, or hot or cold objects. Do not lick, touch, or press ice to skin, and keep her away from freezers, heat sources, and wet floors. The adult handles temperature judgement, cleanup, and all real safety.
Bedtime Recall
- “你想看水滴,还是冰块?”
- Say
Ice can melt into water.once.
