December Picture-Book Celebration
December Picture-Book Celebration
Today two A4 posters turn December into a picture book that can be browsed freely. Celebration is not a reward and does not require finishing every page. One picture Amara chooses to notice is enough.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 8 months old. Keep each activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, one word, quiet, pausing, or declining are valid. Do not quiz, correct, score, rank, reward, force repetition or performance, or require eye contact, a hug, or touch.

Goals
- Chinese: hear December words again in familiar pictures without a retelling demand.
- English: hear a month-end picture-book narration with permission to stop.
- Reading: experience “I may look, point, use one word, stay quiet, or choose no more.”
- Relationship: adults keep records and safety responsibility; a child never performs to earn celebration.
Materials
- Only the two A4 posters above, printed or displayed full-screen.
- The English audio below.
- No prize, sticker, object-based teaching aid, or quiz card, and no requirement to revisit every date.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 3–8 minutes.
Treat the main poster as a picture-book cover and follow Amara's gaze: “这里有天气、冰和水、材料的光、向下的箭头、动物和成长。”“这里还有身体边界、公共场所的大人责任和不同安慰方式。”
If she watches only the cover, skips the extension poster, or leaves quickly, the celebration is still complete.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.

Transcript:
English time. Listen, look, or point. This is our December picture-book celebration. We noticed weather clues, water and ice, light through materials, gravity, animal coverings, growth, body boundaries, public-place safety, and different kinds of comfort. A grown-up keeps the real world safe. You may look, point, use one word, stay quiet, stop, or choose no more. There is no test and no performance. One book. Two picture cards. Three moons.
| English | 中文 | Possible response |
|---|---|---|
picture book | 图画书 | Watch the cover or any panel |
we noticed | 我们注意过 | Point, look toward the adult, or stay quiet |
grown-up keeps safe | 大人负责安全 | Watch the adult-shield picture |
stop | 停止 | Turn, leave, or not respond |
no more | 不再继续 | Stop the audio and put the poster away |
Stopping after one word is valid. The month-end audio is not a completion ritual.
3. Early Math: 1, 2, 3
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Count only the main poster's separate bottom strip: 1 closed book, 2 picture cards, and 3 moons. The moons are counting targets, not rewards or points.
4. My Way to Read
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Point to the extension poster's five modes and state calmly: “可以看。”“可以指。”“可以说一个词。”“可以安静。”“可以停或不要了。”
Do not ask Amara to select and demonstrate a mode. Her current, real mode is already valid.
5. Celebration and Developmental Boundary
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Month-end review accumulates shared-reading experience; it does not prove memory, vocabulary size, attention span, or safety skill. A child may recognise something today and ignore it tomorrow, which is compatible with changing developmental states.
Celebrate Relationship, Not Performance
Do not give scores, stickers, or a “finished everything” prize, compare children, or request a recorded performance. Celebrate having looked together, boundaries being respected, needs being answered, and an adult continuing to carry real safety.
Bedtime Recall
- “这本图画书可以合上了。”
- Say
No more is okay.once, then finish.
