One Set Can Follow Different Grouping Rules
Today two complete posters show the same set: one grouped by colour and one grouped by shape. The adult states each rule; there is no single-answer hunt.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 8 months old. Keep each part to 3–8 minutes and use only the posters and audio. Looking, pointing, saying one word, staying quiet, pausing, or declining all count. The adult describes complete pictures without testing, correction, scoring, rewards, forced retelling, performance, or touch.

Goals
- Chinese: meet “同一组、按颜色、按形状、都可以.”
- English: hear
same pictures,colour,shape, andrule. - Early math: see the same set regrouped under two stated rules.
- Development: the adult shows two possibilities; independent sorting is not expected.
Materials
The two A4 posters and today's English audio. No sorting tray, cards, toys, or movable pieces are needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
View the main poster first and describe in Chinese: “同样的六个图，红色在一组，蓝色在一组，这是按颜色看。” Then view the extension: “还是这六个图，圆形在一组，三角形在一组，方形在一组，这是按形状看。” Both stated rules can work; neither poster is the one correct answer.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Transcript:
English time. Listen, look, or point. The same pictures can be grouped in more than one explained way. This poster groups them by colour. The next poster groups them by shape. Both rules can work. There is not just one possible rule. One red circle. Two blue triangles. Three green squares. You may look, point, stay quiet, or stop.
Listening, pausing, or declining all count. Repetition, retelling, and answers are not requested.
3. Math 1 / 2 / 3
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Count only the main poster's bottom strip: 1 red circle, 2 blue triangles, and 3 green squares. The extension has no counting strip; do not combine the two posters for counting.
4. Gentle Connection
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Show the posters side by side or one after the other and say with an open hand, “This is one rule; this is another rule.” Amara may view either, look back and forth, point to one picture, stay quiet, or stop.
Development and Boundaries
Grouping depends on a rule, and one set may support more than one rule. Do not ask where something “should” go, mix unstated criteria, treat gaze as an answer, or require rearrangement.
Bedtime
Time: 3 minutes. Say softly, “The same pictures can be viewed by colour or by shape.” Do not ask for a reason.
