Expand One Word Without Correcting
Today shows how an adult can receive one word and add a little information that matches the picture. An expansion is an audible language model. It does not mean the child's word was wrong or that the adult knows the child's full intended meaning.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 8 months old. Keep each activity to 3–8 minutes. Looking, pointing, saying one word, staying quiet, pausing, or declining all count. Use only the poster and audio; do not ask for repetition, performance, eye contact, or touch.

Goals

- No ball, language cards, cups, ducklings, or other objects are needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Use the picture to model, “孩子说：‘球。’成人回应：‘我听见了，球。图里的红球在滚动。’” The adult describes what is visible and offers one possible expansion; the longer sentence is not presented as the child's only intended meaning.
Amara may look at the ball, point, say any one word, stay quiet, pause, or decline. Do not say, “You should say the whole sentence,” or ask her to repeat it.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.

Transcript: English time. Listen, look, or point. Child says, Ball. Adult says, The red ball rolls. The adult adds words without correcting the child's word. One word is a complete contribution. One leaf. Two cups. Three ducklings. All done.
Play it once. Point to the ball at “Ball,” then move a fingertip along the rolling line during the expansion. Do not pause the audio to wait for repetition.

3. Early Maths: 1, 2, 3
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Count only the separate bottom strip: one leaf, two cups, and three ducklings. Point to each complete object once; ignore the leaf veins, cup handles, and duckling body parts.
4. How to Expand and Respect Boundaries
Time: 3–5 minutes.
When context is reasonably clear, first receive the child's existing expression and then add only a little information. If Amara looks at the poster and says “球,” the adult may say, “球。红球在滚动。” If the meaning is unclear, say, “I heard ‘ball.’ I am not yet sure what you want to tell me.”
Development Note
Expansion is not pronunciation correction and does not require an immediate longer sentence. Avoid adding a long stack of words or pretending to know the child's full intent. If she does not want to listen further, the expansion stops too.
