Basic Shapes Can Make Pictures
Today we see circles, triangles, and squares as parts of simple pictures. This is picture talk, not a shape-naming test.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 8 months old. Keep each part to 3–8 minutes and use only the poster and audio. Looking, pointing, saying one word, staying quiet, pausing, or declining all count. The adult describes complete pictures without testing, correction, scoring, rewards, forced retelling, performance, or touch.
A4 Teaching Picture
Goals
- Chinese: meet “圆形、三角形、方形、图画.”
- English: hear
circle,triangle,square, andpicture. - Early math: see basic shapes combined within simple pictures.
- Expression: looking, pointing, one word, or quiet are all welcome.
Materials
The A4 poster and today's English audio. No shape cards, magnets, crayons, or construction materials are needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
First name the pictured examples in Chinese: “这是圆形，这是三角形，这是方形。” Then describe the finished pictures: “圆形和两个三角形出现在小猫脸图里；方形和三角形出现在小房子图里。” Describe what is visible; do not ask Amara to find, identify, choose, or name a shape.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Transcript:
English time. Listen, look, or point. A circle, a triangle, and a square can be parts of a picture. A circle and two triangles appear in a simple cat face picture. A square and a triangle appear in a simple house picture. The shapes are already shown. One purple triangle. Two green squares. Three orange circles. You may look, point, stay quiet, or stop.
Listening, pausing, or declining all count. Repetition, retelling, and answers are not requested.
3. Math 1 / 2 / 3
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Count only the bottom strip: 1 purple triangle, 2 green squares, and 3 orange circles. The adult may describe slowly; Amara does not have to point correctly or name a shape.
4. Gentle Connection
Time: 3–5 minutes.
The adult may trace above the outside edge of the cat face and house, then pause over one shape. Amara may watch, point anywhere, say “circle” or “house,” stay quiet, or stop.
Development and Boundaries
Do not ask “What shape is this?” or “Where is the triangle?” Do not compare speed or mark a free point as wrong. The pictures are examples, not the only way pictures can be made.
Bedtime
Time: 3 minutes. Say softly, “The shapes are already in the picture.” Rest on either picture for a moment, then finish.
