Two Parts Within One Whole
Today we view two finished pictures. One whole can show two parts within it. The child does not need to join, separate, complete, or answer.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 8 months old. Keep each part to 3–8 minutes and use only the poster and audio. Looking, pointing, saying one word, staying quiet, pausing, or declining all count. The adult describes complete pictures without testing, correction, scoring, rewards, forced retelling, performance, or touch.
A4 Teaching Picture
Goals

- Development: the adult describes the relation; the child is not expected to explain it.
Materials
The A4 poster and today's English audio. No puzzle, scissors, blocks, paper pieces, or other objects are needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Point to the first complete picture and say in Chinese, “这是一个完整的圆形图。左边是一部分，右边是一部分；两部分已经在整体里。” Then notice the second finished picture: “上边是一部分，下边是一部分；图已经完整。” These are two simplified examples, not a claim that every whole has only two parts.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Transcript:
English time. Listen, look, or point. One whole can have two visible parts. This round picture has a left part and a right part. This tall picture has a top part and a bottom part. The parts are already together. One orange circle. Two blue leaves. Three yellow stars. You may look, point, stay quiet, or stop.
Listening, pausing, or declining all count. Repetition, retelling, and answers are not requested.
3. Math 1 / 2 / 3
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Count only the bottom strip: 1 orange circle, 2 blue leaves, and 3 yellow stars. Keep this strip separate from the part–whole pictures above.
4. Gentle Connection
Time: 3–5 minutes.
The adult may hover two fingers over the two pictured areas, then trace the outside edge of the complete picture. Amara may watch, point to one part, say one word, or finish. Do not touch her or ask her to assemble anything.
Development and Boundaries
Do not cover half and ask for a guess, cut the picture, require joining, or correct where Amara points. Part–whole language is only a gentle shared-viewing introduction.
Bedtime
Time: 3 minutes. Say softly, “The parts are already within the whole. The picture is complete.” Then finish without a question.
