Number Symbols Beside Small Amounts
Number Symbols Beside Small Amounts
Today we gently meet the written symbols 1, 2, and 3 beside matching small amounts. Symbols stay paired with complete pictures; reading and writing are not requested.
Today's Approach
Amara is about 2 years and 8 months old. Keep each part to 3–8 minutes and use only the poster and audio. Looking, pointing, saying one word, staying quiet, pausing, or declining all count. The adult describes complete pictures without testing, correction, scoring, rewards, forced retelling, performance, or touch.
A4 Teaching Picture

Goals
- Chinese: meet “数字符号、旁边、数量.”
- English: hear
number symbol, one, two, andthree. - Early math: see written 1, 2, and 3 gently paired with pictured amounts of 1–3.
- Development: familiarity is enough; recognition, tracing, and recall are not expected.
Materials
The A4 poster and today's English audio. No numeral cards, pen, tracing sheet, magnets, or movable counters are needed.
1. Chinese Picture Talk
Time: 5–8 minutes.
Describe from top to bottom in Chinese: “书写符号 1 在 1 个苹果旁边。书写符号 2 在 2 只小鸟旁边。书写符号 3 在 3 艘小船旁边。” Point to the symbol and then the complete picture group; do not ask Amara to read or write.
2. English Time
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Transcript:
English time. Listen, look, or point. These written marks are number symbols. The symbol one is beside one apple. The symbol two is beside two birds. The symbol three is beside three boats. You do not have to name, read, or write them. One orange apple. Two blue birds. Three green boats. You may look, point, stay quiet, or stop.
Listening, pausing, or declining all count. Repetition, retelling, and answers are not requested.
3. Math 1 / 2 / 3
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Count only the bottom strip: 1 orange apple, 2 blue birds, and 3 green boats. The rows above show symbol–amount pairings; the bottom independently repeats 1–3.
4. Gentle Connection
Time: 3–5 minutes.
Say once, calmly, “The symbol is beside the amount,” then leave space to look. If Amara points to a symbol, picture, or blank area, describe neutrally without correction.
Development and Boundaries
At 2 years and 8 months, numeral reading, recall, and writing are not required. Do not rotate symbols as a test, hide amounts, require matching or tracing, or repeatedly ask which number it is.
Bedtime
Time: 3 minutes. Say softly, “One, two, and three are written symbols. The picture amounts are beside them.” Then finish.
